Anyone ever use this stuff on their wood stocks before? I just was thinking if it is strong enough to walk on then it might be a good finish for wood grips or refinishing rifle stocks. I know guys use it on blued steel to seal it and protect it.
I have used it on my bows and also on my wooden arrows does a fantastic, long lasting job on both plus making the arrows much eaisier to pull from tightly bound cardboard targets. Now you've just given me a new use for it--- Thanks!
I've used it on blued guns and wood stocks for decades. Works great. Put a super shine on blued steel. Also protects it from rusting. Makes stocks look great. A can will last you a long time. Use it on holsters as well to keep them from creaking.
It will work fine on the wood stock and hangrips. It does a great job on metal also. Clean my table saw with alcohol, dry it and then apply the paste wax. Let dry and buff off. Makes the surface nice and smoooth and prevents rust. Great product.
I was wondering when someone was going to mention Pledge. A lot of people on one of the Harley Davidson forums (Harley Davidson Community - Forum Discussions,Share Videos and Photos.) are big, big fans of using Pledge on bikes. I've tried it and it works but I'm hesitant to use it on a blued surface. Anyone have experience in this area. Thanks.
Just called wife who was on her way to the store when I read this thread. Asked her to pick some up. I remember my Mom using it on furniture back in the 60's, but have never tried it myself.
I haven't tried it on bluing but Honda makes a spray 'detail wax' that I used on my bikes for years. Worked on windshields (but got cloudy after a few days) but I used on every other surface. It smells like the old 'Jubelee' wax my mother used when I was a kid.
PS: she also used to use the Johnson's Wax on our green 1956 Ford.
I've used Johnson's Paste Wax for years on the entire gun. It's especially great on on blued parts as it gives a great look and protects without being oily, and on wood it can't be beat.
The main difference between Johnson’s Paste Wax and Pledge are the surface treatment ingredients. Johnson’s uses paraffin and carnauba wax and Pledge uses silicon oil. I don’t see any concentrations of acid in either product. I have both at home but have never used Pledge on anything related to firearms except the wooden fame/handle of my Jukar muzzleloader handgun. It worked just fine on that. I don’t use that firearm all that often and have just restored it to original condition. The metal on it is not waxed. On my GP100, I use Johnson’s on the blued steel components and had used it on my long gun wooden components years ago when I owned long guns.
I don’t think either would be dangerous to your firearms! Pledge is much easier to apply but Johnson’s, when applied properly, lasts longer and protects better in outdoor environments. I used it on wood and metal boat components for many years when I lived back east.
For those who are looking for the Johnson's paste wax and can't find it. I went to Lowe's Home Improvements today. They have an aisle with household cleaning products amongst other stuff. They carry the Johnson's paste wax. It was 5.30 for a fairly decent size can. I would imagine all the Lowe's stores have that aisle with household cleaning stuff. That's where you'll find it.
Thanks, Ruger Redhawk. I have been looking for that in grocery stores. Everyone says they know what I am talking about, but guess they don't carry it anymore.
Found it on Amazon for $10.50 delivered. Seemed kind of high.
Went by Lowe's this afternoon and they did have the Johnsons Paste Wax.
$4.50 per 16oz can. If you would have driven over to Fort Worth you would have saved $.80.
Also found some 7/8" ID flat washers. Someone on some forum suggested using this under your die to keep from adjusting it when you switch from .38 to .357.
When i was a young fella we used it on our saw blades.Hand operated saws not the
powered ones . Did a good job protecting the blade and it glided through the wood as well.
