sp101 as a truck gun?

Any thoughts on ways to store my sp101 in my truck? Since it's stainless, any concerns on rust issues? If so, recommendations on ways to prevent? Also, any suggestions on good places in the truck to store (theft prevention; legal issues; etc.)

For now, I have a "bug out bag" I keep it in behind the seat.

texasjarhead, I have a fairly tough "Gun Vault" case that comes with a steel tie down cable. You can get a key lock or combination lock. Perhaps you should also check with Texas gun laws in order to stay legal. There are several models and sizes. Cost around $25. Nice quality.

This sounds like one of the best options for times when you absolutely cannot take the gun with you. Other than that, I don't recommend leaving your weapon in a vehicle unattended.

Store mine on a magnetic strip on the steering column and it's only in the truck when I'm in the truck. (I take it with me everywhere I go along with my LCP in a pocket. Soon to be replaced with a LC9)

I don't have an answer as to legality since I'm not acquainted with your local laws. However, when it comes to rust -- I recently bought an early SP101 (because it was cheap) in .38 sp that apparently had been obviously been badly neglected and abused -- perhaps used as a boat gun, although I don't know.

It has extensive pitting on the outside which is noticeable even after sandblasting. However, the barrel, chambers and lockwork are clean, so I bought it and it shoots... like a Ruger. I think the take-away is that even if it's stainless steel, as with all firearms, one should not neglect it and should practice regular maintance.

Having said that, it's a testimony to Ruger's quality that it is still a fully functional and reliable firearm in spite the neglect and abuse someone obviously heaped on it for years.

I have thought about a truck gun for years but just haven't been comfortable enough to leave a firearm locked in my truck. I figure the criminals know where the hiding places are and how to quickly access them. I have a 2007 Chevy 1 ton and it has a lockable storage box underneath a fold down center console. That may be the idea spot but it is also obvious and I suspect the plastic won't be much of a challenge for entry. In short it keeps the honest people out. The idea of a small vault like the on Ham posted has merit and may be what I need.

As far as Texas goes I though you could carry a loaded handgun out of sight in your vehicle without a CCL. Don't rely on me though check it out so you are sure it is ok.

I don't leave my handguns in my car or truck. I pack a handgun on my person and take it with me where ever I go. Now I've read one story where a handgun was stolen from a truck and used in a violent robbery. Apparently they local law was thinking of going after the truck/gun owner. I never did find out what happened but every since I've always packed my handgun on my person.

Jarhead, If you keep it in the truck, take it out once a week or so & wipe her down with some WD. If you keep it where you can get at it (or even stashed deeply) and someone breaks in, they're gonna find it. It's a risk. You can keep the gun from getting goobered up easily but unless you got some sorta force field around your truck, or your house for that matter somebody can always find a way to get to it. Only you can decide what is an acceptable risk.

I use a "gun and reel" cloth. It's silicon impregnated and pretty tough. I recommend this over the WD as it will kill primers if it ever comes in contact with them.

Gun Protection

I just recently purched an SP with 3 inch barrel and have ordered a Sentry Solution Armorers kit to help maintain it. I have used the TUFF cloth from the sands of Iraq to the tropics of Haitti while serving as MP with the Marines and was impressed. I expect the kit to be a step up. The TUFF cloth leaves a dry film over the metal, giving a layer of protection that does not collect dirt sand, lint, etc.
