Hey RugerChic - great question! I'll bet you'll get more answers though if you post it over on the CCW (concealed carry weapon) forum. Have you had the chance to shoot many handguns? Like most things there's not one particular handgun that will suit all people, circumstances and preferences. I happen to carry an SR40C semi-auto pistol or an LCR revolver depending on what I'm wearing. I think the SR9C is another great choice in 9mm. LCP is another even smaller pistol option. These are popular Ruger options for CCW. There are others - for example, S&W M&P Shield is a good choice in either .40 S&W or 9mm. But watch out - there a LOT of options out there and it can be bewildering to sort through them all!
Best thing would be to find a gun store with a range and rent/try as many as you can and see what you like. If you're looking for just one concealed carry firearm you probably need to decide if you want a pistol or a revolver and then drill down to the best caliber/model that works for you. Take your time, ask lots of questions, handle as many at the counter of the gun store as you want and try to shoot all the ones on your short list of candidates before buying.
Just some thoughts/opinions of mine for what they're worth. Congratulations again on your American Rifle in .270. I use the .270 for deer as well and like it. Good luck on your hunting this fall - be sure to post some results in the Hunting forum!
