New SR22P AMMO ?

I'm new here, so please forgive me if this is the wrong place to introduce myself.

I'm 57 years old, and have lived in eastern North Carolina for the past 18 years. Prior to that, I lived, and grew up in southwest Georgia.

I grew up with firearms, so I know a little about them, but am far from being an expert.

The first weapon that I purchased for myself was a Ruger Security Six, back "about" 1975? Before that, the only weapon that was "mine" was an Ithaca model 37 shotgun that my Dad gave me for my 16th birthday.

BTW, I still have both of them, and wouldn't consider parting with either.

I'm NOT a collector, but I do had a safe full of weapons that I have accumulated over the years. Nothing exotic, just "normal stuff".

I have only 3 Rugers. My old Security Six, a 77/22 rifle, and my new SR22P.

This is not about brand loyalty. I buy what I want, depending on the situation.

Last week, I bought a new SR22P, just because I liked how it felt in my hand.

Took it to the range Sunday, and put 1 525 round box of Federal Champion 36 grain through it.

I was impressed with the gun, but not too impressed with the ammo.

Most of it hit in an about 3" group, (at 15 yards) but I had several flyers. Way BIG flyers.

Out of that 525 round box, I only had 1 failure to eject, and 1 failure to fire. (It did fire on the 3rd try) So I'm not complaining too much.

Everything that I've read says that the SR22P will eat anything. I get that.

But what ammo shoots the best in YOUR SR22P?

Thanks,

Duane

I tried several types of ammo when I first got my SR22 and it seems to function perfectly with the Federal Red Box. If I do my job, accuracy is very good at 15yds.

The first time I shot the Sr22, I had several faucial urges to feed. When I figured out the way I was loading the magazine by pulling the follower all he way down and dropping the rounds in allowed some of he rounds to not align properly causing the FTF, I started pulling the follower down just enough to load each round so spring pressure continued on the stack until the mag was loaded.

I haven't had a malfunction in the last several hundred rounds.

The brand name is "Bulldog". Sorry, I don't have a model number for it. When I was dealing with the LGS, as I was "negotiating" I mentioned that it'd be hard to find a holster for the weapon with the Crimson Trace Laser on the rail.

His response was something like "Of course I have a holster for it", and then grabbed that one from the holster wall.

And it was fairly cheap. I think $17.95. No, it ain't the best holster in the world, but for the price, it's pretty darned decent. It's also ambidextrous, with an adjustable retention strap.

Don't know how to explain it, but the belt clip, and the retention strap can be swapped in just a couple of minutes.

I left the LGS with the weapon on my hip. Sadly, the cardboard backer with model number info was left in his trash can.

I will have to look into that because that seems like a decent holster at a cheap price. I do not need an expense holster just one that can be used while i'm out plinking

Welcome to the forum. I've got two Sr22's thet eat everything I feed them. Mostly Federal Red box bulk Walmart. CCI mimi mags are great. Want to have some fun run a box of CCI stingers thru. I've checked with Ruger and it's ok to run them in the SR22's. I won't use them all the time. But it's a blast once in awhile.

Some of us had some FTLs, including frequent occurences on the 2nd round of a full mag.

Most of these occurred with lead bullets when the coating was waxy or sticky. The solution was to either use jacketed rounds, or make sure the pistol was lightly oiled as spec'd in the manual. Lead rounds that feel slippery or at least neutral to the touch were not a problem.

The second round FTLs went away either because of the above, or because we grew careful to load the mags under pressure . . . eg, not using the magazine button at all. This seemed to ensure the rim of each round was in front of the round beneath it. Dunno if this actually fixed anything . . . but using pressure . . . and after the oiling . . . the FTLs disappeared.

Mini-mags always load and fire, no matter what . . . but its cheaper to keep the pistol a little wet inside, and then it will load and fire almost anything.

Enjoy your SR22 . . . it's really a fungun.

I have been having a ball with my SR22P. One FTF in the first 500 and none since. When you have ran a box or two of the cheap stuff through, try a box of CCI MiniMag in it. That really wakes it up.

We finally ordered a couple extra mags from CDNN Indst. With four mags loaded, the fun does not stop as often.

it's a great gun.

Like you, I don't just buy a gun because it says Ruger on it. It just seems that lot of the fun guns in my safe are stamped Ruger. FWIW - another fun Ruger weapon I'm having a ball with is the Ruger Gunsite Scout. .308 is a big jump in caliber, but it's a joy to shoot.

Have Fun

Hi from Caswell County, NC. I have several 22 handguns both revolvers and semiautos and I purchased an SR22 about a month ago. I teach NRA Basic Pistol and the NC CCW Classes and provide handguns to those that either want to try different guns or just haven't purchased one yet. I've used every kind of cheap ammo from every company selling 22 lr ammo in the past and had my share of failures. I've found the 40 grain CCI Blazer ammo to work best in all of these guns. It's clean burning and very accurate but I've only found it in round nosed bullets so far. I get it for $17.95 a brick at my LGS.

I have a Blackhawk #7 belt holster(paid about $13 on sale) that works for the SR22p, LC9, SR9c & my Glock 17. I just use it around my property to carry what ever I grab. I adjusted the retention strap so that it will fit the biggest gun(Glock) but it still works for the smallest(LC9)
