Used 22/45 Hunter, first pistol, what ammo?

My husband and I just bought our first pistols, after just very occasional rifle or shot gun shooting. I got a used Ruger 22/45 Mark III Hunter. I read the field stripping threads. but it was still difficult, guess I could use more arm strength. This piece seems to 'stovepipe' fairly frequently. should I use a more high power cartridge like a CCI minimags so that it will eject better?

Mine had a stovepiping problem as well with bulk ammo. It always cycled fine with Minimags.
BUT, there is a solution to the problem. The reason they stovepipe is the extractor not being able to apply enough force to extract the shell. I got one of these: https://www.volquartsen.com/products...ctor-mkiimkiii
and now mine feeds everything great.

Welcome from S.E. Michigan. I think you're gonna like it here. Check the rimfire section. You will most likely find what you need there.

Patham ... Welcome from SW Ohio ... Glad to have you aboard! I would second the recommendation to install a VQ Exact Edge Extractor. The problem that you describe often stems from a combination of the "round nose" design and/or a warn edge on the factory extractor that ultimately doesn't allow it to consistently get a firm grip on the case rim during he extraction process.

I am not familiar with the 22/45 Mark III hunter, so I am not able to answer your question, but I can welcome you to the forum from N.E. Oklahoma, originally from Newport, R.I.

22/45 ammo and extractor

Thanks Justin, I'll be trying the minimags this week. I'll wait on a new extractor until I'm sure I need it as I'm also thinking about about having a volquartsen trigger installed.

Most any of the exposed lead tip amo get's the weapon dirty and "jammy" faster. Other than that I've had pretty decent luck with most any 22 lr. Shooting and testing is about the only way to really pick a favorite or best.
