Plus 1 to that...."Grandaddys gun"...reminds me of this song

Using Ballistol on a gun I have already cleaned with something else reminds me of the old Ed Sullivan shows where Ed would have a guy from the audience try a Remington electric shaver on his recently shaved face... "Now, let's bring that camera in for the really big shew." Ballistol really does get into the pores. But as long as my wife attacks me every time I use Hoppe's #9, I'll toss a splash around. It has worked for 45 years, and cleans guns pretty good too.

If you spray a light mist of Hoppe's #9 on your bed at night you will have sweet dreams.

While I agree with all of you who praise the smell of Hoppes #9 (in fact, after I finish typing this, I think I'll go take a whiff of it!), I've been using Ballistol and am happy with it.

The only thing I wonder about Ballistol is how anything that tastes good can actually clean things.

Ballistol is good stuff and it is all-in-one. But so is FrogLube and IMO, it's the best you can get. Checkout their site on froglube.com. Their claims are true and I'm frog lubing my Rem 700 SPS right now with it. Been using it a couple of months and that's all I use now.

I've used EEZOX for awhile... but I'm currently out. Cleaned all the guns last night and used Hoppe's #9 and finished off with Hoppes gun oil.

I love the smell of Hoppes in the morning. It smells like freedom I use a lot of Butch's Bore Shine. I have recently been using Weapon Shield and have liked so far. I never tried Ballistol.

I use Hoppe's #9, Ballistol, and isopropyl alcohol. I see no reason to limit myself to one solvent.

I bought several travel size (read "small") empty spray bottles @ Target. All 3 solvents work in these bottles. While I usually use the solvents in liquid form, having the spray option is useful.

After a year of watching Hickock45's videos, I decided to try Ballistol. I'm a Hoppes No.9 solvent & Hoppes Elite Cleaner devotee, so this is really different.

I'm going to solely use Ballistol to clean my new P95. So far, it does remove powder fouling just not as quickly as Hoppes. Ballistol needs more dwell time to do the job. I'm still getting used to cleaning and lubing in one step.

The one thing that irks me is the Ballistol scent. To me it smells like black licorice mixed with light body odor.

Hoppes quality as an aphrodisiac is well known and contested only by the perfume industry.

But it has remained around on shooting benches so long because it works. Ballistol works too, but its smell can be just the opposite in poorly ventilated quarters, and can be particularly irritating to the nasal glands (burning, itching, sneezing, with minor tear-gas like reactions at times), especially if it is used together with certain other common solvents or lubricants; namely Hoppes. I was an electroplater during the 60s, and only a couple of compounds we used were as irritating, and they were very dangerous. Such olfactory reactions are often God's way of letting us know that danger might be present. I've no idea what the chemical reaction with other agents is, but it bears caution when fumes rise.

Having said that, I use both, not because one works better, but because I like the variety and the assortment on the cleaning bench with all the other bottles and cans looks impressive, just as a rack of ten screwdrivers looks, even when you only use two sizes.

Get five guys sitting around a table and ask this question, you will get six different answers. Or more. But WRT to the OP, Ballistol has been around since the early 1900s, and I think it is a great general cleaner and lubricant. I still use Gunzilla on some guns but that's only until I use up what I have. I use a CLP internally except on extra wear points where I use gun grease (that's a whole different thread!), and wipe the outsides and mags with a silicon cloth. I also starting wiping Ballistol on my motorcycle boots, holsters, and rifle slings for shine and waterproofing. I'd use it as a hair tonic if I had any. I wonder if it works for constipation.....

There are many different products that specialize in different tasks. Some disolve copper fouling very well, others specialize in lubrication and others in corrosion prevention. Others like CLP or Hoppes #9 do some of those things sort of well and are general purpose solutions. Others like Kroil penetrating oil will disolve rust and get under lead fouling and help loosen it so it can be scraped out with a wire brush.

If you are looking for something general purpose Break Free CLP will probably be as good as anything else.
I agree on the CLP breakfree. It works well for me. Kroil also gets my vote as a cleaner. Most important is not to use much and wipe off the access. Oil attracts dirt which will hamper proper operation.
