| New ruger LCR-Polymer safe cleaner?
I just purchased a new Ruger LCR and before I give it its first cleaning I want to know what to use for cleaning solvent. The owners manual states that a polymer safe solvent needs to be used. Is good ol' Hoppes #9 solvent OK?
Thanks!
Bob

Bob | Good ol' Hoppes No. 9 works for cleaning the metal parts of my LCR. I just wipe down the polymer frame with a rag moistened with Slip 2000 degreaser.

Hoppes elite cleaner is safe for polymer and has no fumes. (though I rather like the smell of the original hoppes)

I've used CLP and regular gun oil on all types of polymer pistols for years and never had any problems. My P95 and P97 were both bought over 12 years ago and still look brand new.

I posted this in another thread but haven't seen an answer. Can mineral spirits safely be used as a solvent to clean guns? I have been using it, it's a lot cheaper than Hoppes and seems to work fine. I usually use it for the first few reams with the wire bore brush and then switch to Hoppes. I use it on my Beretta 92F, LC9, LCR, and two sp101's.

I use Montana X-treme Copper Killer and then Hoppes #9 in the barrel and cylinders (careful not to get on polymer) and oil with CLP. |

I called Ruger today and asked them what they recommend and they told me that either Breakfree CLP or Shooters Choice CLP. I asked them about Hoppe's 9 but could not get a straight answer from them about it. They did say that ti make sure anything I use is acetone free and that is the only thing they knew would do damage to polymer.

FYI, before I called them I went online asked Ruger what they recommended. They got back to me yesterday and said they use Break Free CLP at the Ruger factory. They also told me that Hoppes #9 bore cleaner and the Otis O85 ultra bore are also safe to use.

My understanding from the KAHR forum - for cheaper alternative to BC Synthetic Safe Gun Scrubber, use 3M brake cleaner, but only # 08880, the non-chlorinated version. The guys there say it is safe for polymer. Also - be aware - I see 2 versions of BC Gun Scrubber - for polymer, be sure to get the Synthetic Safe version.

If all else fails....read the can! Gun Scrubber claims to be safe, I use it on my plastic toys. Don't remember the name brand but WalMart carries something that clearly states it's not for use on synthetic guns. Read the can !!!!
