I have been slowly starting to digest all the info here. I just purchased a new sp101. I was hoping to find some advise for a first time gun owner with regard to cleaning and maintenance. Are there any particular tools to purchase for cleaning that may be different than what I do for my rifle?

hey there Brett... sorry nobody's responded to you yet... the tools you need for cleaning a revolver are pretty much the same used for cleaning a rifle...and the concept is basically the same. here's a really simple list that'll do for at least basic cleaning: -Hoppe's boresnake (in the appropriate caliber) -Breakfree CLP -toothbrush -cloth/rag of some kind here's a link to a video on how to clean a revolver...long & boring, but he pretty much has it right. (you can use the Boresnake rather than the brush/patches...saves a ton of time). hope this helps...let us know if you have more questions... TN.Ruger |

Depends on what you do for your rifle. The above suggestions are good ones. YouTube is HUGE for instructional videos. |

Brett K, Just as you can never have too many guns, neither can you ever have too many cleaning supplies. For a handgun, here are a few. Non-marring cleaning rod. Lint-free patches. Brass bore brush and jag. Hoppe's No. 9 Powder Solvent to remove powder residue. Sweet's 7.62 or Montana Extreme Copper Killer and a Nylon bore brush to remove copper fouling. Copper cleaning pads (Chore Boy, i.e.) to remove lead fouling. Kano's Kroil to penetrate under built-up fouling and to make future cleaning easier. (This stuff has more uses than you imagine.) Quality gun oil. Old tooth brushes. Bore light. A collection of hollow-ground, gunsmith screwdrivers or a 1/4" driver with the same type of bits. Cleaning mat. Enjoy your new handgun. |
