sling

ok, so i already posted this in another forum but haven't received a single reply, so i'm going to repost it here, and hopefully get a few responses, so here goes:

-- so i just bought my ruger 10 22 about two weeks ago, and am planning on taking it up to montana with me in a couple weeks. going to do some plinking on a friend's property who has some nice acreage (jealousy), and i'd like to have a sling for it, but mine did not come with any kind of mounts/swivels for a sling. anyone out there have any experience putting sling mounts of their 10 22? i'm guessing i'm going to have to drill into the butt of the stock, so for that reason and any others that i might not have thought of yet, i thought i'd ask around, as i don't want to mess anything up on my nice new 10 22.

I've not installed sling studs on a 10/22, but here you might find some helpful tips:

1. How to Install Gun Sling Swivel Studs

2. Installing sling swivel studs to 10/22 wood stock

Good luck.

I should have added that it isn't a hard job at all. It isn't as precise as many other gun related jobs. If you mount your sling stud a 1/2" further forward than others usually do, no big deal. Also, if it isn't perfectly, dead centered on the bottom, no big deal. The main thing is you do a careful and clean job drilling, and also pay attention to the other tips those links give. I think you'll be happy with it. A drill press would be mighty helpful, by the way, if you have access to one.

If you can find a military rifle sling, so much the better. I bought a 1-1/4" leather loop sling originally for the M1 Garand for my 10-22 and can easily shoot spent shotgun cases off their perches at 50 feet.

YMMV.

thanks, phriday. and where might one find such a sling? army/navy surplus? i'd actually love a leather sling if possible. not essential, but nice.

I drilled mine by hand and it didn't come out quite perfect but it's OK if you don't look real close. It would have been easier with a vise. I also had to sand down the barrel band to get it tight when I reinstalled it.

Ouch! No vise. That will make it harder. j3rd said he did his without a vise, but I wonder how he held it still? No drill press? No vise? Hmm, be careful. Do any of your buddies have a vise or a drill press? Ask around a bit.

actually, now that i think of it i do have a vice somewhere--- i've just never set it up on a workbench here, as we live in a condo with no garage, so i don't have a workspace per se (and i don't think my fiancee would be too happy if i mounted it on the master bathroom counter). but i'm glad you brought it up, 'cuz it jogged my memory that i actually do have one. will have to go dig it out. the impediments of condo living do NOT make up for the convenience!

Of course the other way to go is with a Promag aluminum barrel band teamed up with a VTAC buttstock adapter and one of the VTAC slings. No holes. No permanent change to your 10/22. I'm rigging my two Takedowns that way.

Thanks, this is exactly what I was looking for!!

I have the Promag barrel band on my tactical 10/22 and was looking for a buttstock adapter/sling combo.

Glad to help out. You'll find both items at Brownells online and I'd upgrade to the padded VTAC sling for more comfort.
