I guess it depends on what you're shooting. If it's a 50 cal at 50 yards, then you don't need a lot of magnification. If you're shooting .22 at 200 yards, you need a lot of magnification. So it's all relative to what you shoot and what range you shoot at. I use a 12-50x50mm variable spotting scope, and it's just barely enough to see 22's at 100 yards (black holes on black background).

Thanks guys. Yes, it is mostly .204 or 22-250 at 100 yards, or 17 HMR at 50 yards. I do splurge and use Shoot N' C targets, so I guess 20-30x would work for me. Anybody else opinion on this??

This depends on how well the target is illuminated if its a black target especially if the sun isn't shining on the target. A gray overcast day can make it a challenge!

Thanks Gibbs, good point. Here in AZ we are blessed with sunshine to the point we wish for cloudy days (so it isn't so hot). Tomorrow we head out at the crack of dawn to get in some target shooting before it reaches 100 degrees.

Another thing to consider is the size of the objective lens. It determines the amount of light the scope will gather. I have a 20x-60x scope with an 80MM objective lens. When spotters take a peek through it they are surprised how bright and clear it is. Kinda like HD TV when compared to standard.
My advice - buy the scope that gives the most magnification AND largest objective lens you can afford and then add !0% to your top end price. You might cruise the web looking for telescope stores. It is where I acquired mine - on sale! Oh yeah - and a decent tripod, too, from the same place. Nothing worse than a crappy scope and tripod when you're trying to shoot at longer distances - especially on low light / cloudy days. Yes - it will cost but the performance is worth it.
Just my two cents.

Hey all,
That is exactly what I have been going through. I shoot my .17hmr at 200 yards and a 20x60 80mm cant see the hole. It is even tricky at 100 yards. I have a Barska 20x125 80mm spotting scope coming, will post how that works. Oh, and it was 50% off too ($180.00 landed in Wpg)

I feel your pain Rhyno. I am not sure your new scope will cure the problem. Have you tried Shoot N C targets yet? They are a little pricey, but if you buy a big package on ebay they aren't too bad. They are the best thing you can do for seeing holes in targets at a distance. Keep us posted on the new spotting scope.

I am cheeeep on my spotting scope. I have a 7-35 X 40 Selsi scope I gave $16 for on eBay. It's an old Seventies hiking type scope. Sits on an adjustable 1-4 foot high tripod I gave $8 for at Big Lots.
Shooting just rimfire though, I usually just carry my 10 X 25 Bushnell binocs. Cheeeep there, too, $18 on clearance somewhere.
