I have a 1973 10/22 that my father was going to put a leather sling on. I like leather slings. But I have No budget for a real good one. Too many choices and some may be terrible. Variations in leather color when wanting the wood stock and sling to compliment each other.
Seems a majority (at least those discussing Appleseed type events) suggest the cotton USGI M1 Garand sling which I think looks good on a Carbine.
But does the metal hardware scratch the stock?
It can. I've got the cotton sling on a M1 style 10/22 and keep it in a soft case. The hardware has dented up the stock somewhat, but I think it gives the gun an 'experienced' look. A hard case would probably prevent this from happening. Another way would be to use quick-detach (QD) swivels and remove the sling.
While leather slings look cool, they're a pita to adjust quickly when you change shooting positions like at an Appleseed event. Here again, I speak from experience.
Yep most of my hunting rifles have been marked by the swivels nothing much you can do. The worst I have is my 416 Ruger guide gun its got a barrel swivel and it and the sling rivets have marked the barrel. Taking them off for storage will help. I reached a point where I figured well it just adds to the character of the rifle.
A quick trip around ebay will find you a good quality leather sling from a small home based leather worker if your on a budget. Or if your really keen and a little bit handy have a try at making one local leather/saddle shop will set you up with the leather for not much. Is a heap of joins you can do without rivets that look neat. Is even a sling you can make your self from weaved paracord the few I have seen done look really neat.
