It's gettin hard to find good 40"-42" soft cases for non scoped rifles anymore.
They're all either for scoped rifles, or long for shotguns.

Hope this might help you out.
Just recently picked up a soft case from Midway for a Golden Boy. 40" long.
2 Heavy-duty Carrying Handles, the one we got is Heavy Brown Duck Material.
It is a Scoped case but it is a very tight fit with the Scope.
Very well constructed inside heavy Flannel padding, 1 outside small compartment.
Both have more than sufficient Zippers. Opening the zippers all the way allows it to open flat. Yep, no more scratched Wood Stock's or Blued Finish's.
Me think's that I saw at Midway they also had a Sock to put your rifle in. If ya decided to use the Sock with the case it should be a tight fit without much room for the Rifle to slide around.
If it wasn't Midway then Brownell's had the Sock.
Pretty well overall constructed would be able to handle Normal Abuse.
I think the price was around $35.oo.

Amazon's got several options from Plano. I've had a couple of these. Very Nice cases - well built and travel safe.

My wife took a long scarf and sewed one side and the bottom together for a nice sleeve for my Henry Big Boy, works well.

Its made out of micro fleece.

Well I do have another thought and I will have to price out the leather at a Tac Shop I found about 20 miles south of me. The seem to have a good supply of different weights of leather. Find a light weight leather similar to a coat. Then make of a pattern and get the wife to get her heavy needles made for sewing leather. She has one of the older Bernina sewing machines that would do a good job. Just a very simple sleeve with a fold over flap and leather tie's at the end of the sleeve.

LeverGunFan is on a distinguished road
I've purchased two or three well made gun cases from Unique Cases. They have two models for rifles without scopes, in lengths starting at 36 inches, which are great for carbines:
