Western Field Scopes

Hey guys I just picked up a used Savage with a Western Field 3x9x32 on it and I can't find any infor on this scope anywhere. I know it's probably pretty old but it looks new and is pretty clear. It says made in Japan and S60 on the rear barrel if that make any difference, perhaps the model number?

All I could find in a net search is that these were sold through Montgomery Wards in the past. Is it worth trying out or should I just pitch it and put a Burris on the rifle instead?

Bullitholz, Western Field was Ward's brand name for OEM sporting goods. Hard to say what company made your scope but I would bet it was Tasco. The Japanese optics should be pretty good but it's hard to say how durable it might be. The inexpensive Japanese scopes use a rubber "O" ring between the inner tube and outer tube for a swivel joint instead of a metal joint like the better US made models. As such, the rubber dries out after 10 years or so and allows the inner tube to wander. All you can do is try it. If the groups spread compared to a known good scope, the "O" ring is kaput.

You know this scope does kind of have that "Tasco" look to it now that I think about it.

Is it possible to change out those o-rings to tighten things back up?

I think I have decided to get a Burris Full Field II for the rifle but this one should come in handy on a .22 or some other gun in the future.

We're gonna have to talk!

Maybe I can talk you into installing one of those infernal high ride beavertail safeties on this thing.
