I read some reviews of the work sharp and it's good but you have to be careful you don't round off the tips. Also, because of belt flex, it puts a convex edge on the blade. If you check the work sharp web site( WSKTS: Abrasives | Work Sharp Tools ), intermediate grit belts are available (400 & 600 aluminum oxide, 1500 grit diamond and 1800 grit Silicon carbide) to fill the gap between the 220 grit and 6000 grit belts that come with the sharpener. It's a good unit for someone who has a lot of knives or little time. It puts a good edge on the blade but it is not for the purist who is fussy about the edge obtained. You need to take the time necessary to learn how to use the unit.

this is exactly what i don't understand about the knife snobs (or "purists" as you call them). Sharp is sharp. Watch the equip2endure vid on this thing--he sharpens the knife and can shave his arm hair easily.

you call out a convex edge like its a bad thing--who cares as long as it's sharp and works?

a lot of folks complained about that new fangled automobile too--do you see many people commuting on horses these days?

I don't consider myself to be a purist but I prefer using the non motorized Lansky. If I had the extra cash for the Edge Pro, I'd probably go with it. I agree, sharp is sharp. But if what you're using doesn't maintain a consistent angle, you're grinding excess amounts away from your blade to get the same level of sharpness.

So there is no right or wrong way to get your knife sharp but there are ways to protect it and make it last longer. My dad used some sort of automated way to sharpen his knives but when they were old they had lost some of the original shape. But, man were they sharp.

knife sharpener

I have one for my wife's kitchen knife and it works better than anything I have used before. Also works great on scissors.

I use 2 porceline rods set at a 22 degree angle. It will put a wicked edge on any type of knife in short order. Then strop it a few times and you have a great edge on your knife.

I have found that this Chef's Choice electric sharpener works well for all my wife's kitchen knives as well as my folders.

There is many levels of sharpness. I can shave hair after I'm done with my 220 grit stone off my Edge pro. There is a reason I take it to 6000 grit. Also using a electric sharpener, you will take more metal off the blade than a manual sharpener. Also, I like manual sharpening because you don't need a plug in to use it. On my Edge pro system, I can take the back bevel down to as low as 9degrees. I can set the angle from 9-30 degrees and I can micro bevel. I can sharpen scissors, serrated blades, fish hooks, and Broadheads. I can sharpen different edge grinds (scandi, recurve, etc.)

What does that thing you have do again?

Tracer is an unknown quantity at this point
Like I stated in the begining of this thread, I don't have a lot of time to sharpen my knives or the wife's knives. I have many other things I like doing for FUN much better, such as shoot guns and ride Harley Motorcycle, now that is real Fun Gents! The sharpening of knives is pure work, especially when your using stones to do the job. I don't mind paying the electric company .50 cents worth of usage to shapen my hunting knives, at least 2 dozen of them.

I guess it depends on what your definition of sharp is. If you were to look at the edge under magnification, if done properly you'd see a very smooth, precise angle with the Lansky or Edge Pro. I suspect if you looked at the automated one, you'd find a much rougher and far less precise edge.

Yeah, they're both sharp but if you love your knives, you'd want to go with the former. If your knives are just tools, then the latter would be fine and much quicker.

It's kind of like comparing a Mercedes AMG to a Ford Mustang.

If I had an electric sharpener and wanted to sharpen my knife while in the woods...I'd have to find a current bush, so I could plug it in...LOL

I enjoy sharpening. I enjoy the challenge of it. I like to tinker with stuff and its fun for me to try different angles, edges, and steels. Sharpening is like reloading which I also do. Its a refinement of something I enjoy. I love to use my knife and I love to shoot. I like the satisfaction that I can freehand a hair wittling edge. I take pride in watching my 400 yard groups shrink because I changed the bullet depth. I guess some people enjoy different things and I'm good with that.

P.S.. What's the difference between and Harley and a vacuum? The position of the dirt bag!

Sorry, don't take offense, I tell every Harley rider that. Ones on my wish list but haven't got the wife convinced. What model do you ride?

Check out the Wicked Edge!!! It works on a similar principle to the Edge Pro or the Lansky, but you can do both sides of the blade at once, with a natural motion, and it takes ALL the human error out of the equation. The best thing on the market IMO.

I've seen this system, but looks like a Lansky rotated 90° to me. I imagine it does just as good a job but I wouldn't think better.
