OK, I'm sure a lot of people will have an issue with this, but a Cold Steel Bushman is what I use. I've beat the heck out of this knife, made a knew sheath for it, and wrapped the handle in cord. For the money it's really worth it. $20-30. They have changed some of the design since my model to improve it. It's cheaper, but if you screw it up you can buy 5 of them in your price range, lol. It supposedly has a RC hardness of 56-57. I try to be both frugal and utilitarian on things like this.

Video says RC-54. Sorry. Not sure which report is correct.

I've pretty much gone into minimalist mode for camping knives. A Mora #2 and an Opinel folder or two will meet all my needs in most cases. I usually have a Granfors axe along as well if I'm truck camping.

When we used to backpack into the White Mountain's in NH I never carried anything larger than a Buck 112 folder. For cooking I carried a single burner gas backpacking stove and dehydrated meals.

i love big beefy knives, but not because they are the perfect camp knife. they will work, and i have split firewood with a Becker but that isnt an ideal situation.
bring a knife to do basic camp chores with (imo 3-4" blade is ideal), a machete to clear with and a hatchet/small axe to cut and split wood.

The Cold Steel leatherneck would be perfect. It is NOT a fighting knife, it is similar to the Kabar USMC knife which is also not a fighting knife. Those are survival knives, jack of all trades master of none... A pure fighting knife would be something like the boker applegate or the cold steel OSS.
Anyway, you should get something rugged enough you can baton sapplings and split kindling. There are lots of good ones out there, in addition to Cold Steel, and Kabar, look at Ontario knives. Do a google search for "good bushcraft knives" and you'll be in business. | Any KA-BAR Marine Corps Fighting Knife is not a fighting knife? What is it then?

After fifty plus years of carrying and using a fixed blade knife for fishing, hunting and camping, I've found a knife with a blade length of 3 1/2" to 4 1/2" is about all you will ever need. My current favorite is a ESEE 4, it comes in with about a 4" cutting edge and even with the 1095 steel blade being easier to rust, the blade is just so much easier to get/keep a sharp edge in the field. |

Like others have said Becker, and ESEE are great options. I have been alternating between my BK2 and my ESEE4. I'll tell you what, the ESEE 4 is amazingly sharp, and has really held its edge. It is probably the one I grab for most camp chores, but when I want to really beat on a knife I turn to the BK2! |

This is seen on Ka-Bar's home page sidebar: The history of KA-BAR Knives and the production of the iconic KA-BAR USMC Fighting/Utility knife.
It's a video about it's history. Everyone is right. It is a fighting knife. It is a utility knife.
And everyone lived happily ever after.

I`m starting to get real fond of my Ontario sp8. They call it a machete, but I see it as more of a utility tool small enough to carry but heavy enough to use like a small hatchet, digging tool, or defensive knife if need be.
Sheath is junk but the knife is really nice.

Whatever you buy, please buy American or European. As far as guns, knives, tools, etc. and that sort of thing go, it's not worth your time to buy Chinese. And you don't have to spend three figures for a knife. Buck and Case make some good fixed blades for reasonable prices, and with reasonable care you will be handing them down to your Grandchildren.
If you can't find something you like new, buy used.
