The only knives that get mentioned are 'weapons', everyone wants to be tacticool ...or Rambo. It doesn't matter the quality of usefulness ...as long as it is HUGE and looks cool they gotta have it.

I grew up in the day where a knife was a 'tool' not a weapon. I carried a pocket knife to school from Jr. High on. I know there are people here and elsewhere that will argue that their huge tactical knife is a tool. IMO I've had WAY more situations where my knife was 'too big' than when it was 'too small'.

It's been said I carry a "Gentleman's Folder" ...well ...I'm rarely called a 'Gentleman'. Right now I'm carrying a Hen & Rooster medium stockman with stag handles and stainless blades. I've carried a Greman Eye medium stag / stainless stockman up until a year or so. I'll probably go back to the German Eye ...or pull one of the older "Voss" H & R stash I have. This is getting into the 'heart' of my collecting. Stag handled German folders ...German Eye, H & R, Henckles mostly.

Please forgive my 'rant' above. It just seems the world has forgotten everything that isn't tactical.

I'll say this about Carl Schleiper/Eye Brand: I was assigned to write an article for a knife magazine and the editor wants to include a couple of boutique brands in it. Both are made here and are pretty high dollar. One doesn't even offer stainless blades on most models. My two Eye Brand trappers dating from the '80's are as well or better made. And the brand typically sells for less when I see the knives.

Where did you find the stag-handled Victorinox, and which model is it?

I bought it new in the early 70's at R.E.I. and it doesn't have a number on it like most Victorinox knives do. When I lived in the country I carried it all the time. With the leather sheath its very handy and big enough for most farm chores. It has a skinning blade and a saw blade with a bottle opener and a screwdriver on the end of the saw. On the back it has a cork screw and a thin sharp pointed blade.

I've only used the main blade and the skinner. Hard to believe I've had it for almost 40 years.

One Gerber for field dressing and a couple of leatherman types which probably don't count. Recently saw a knife show (cutlery corner) and it perked up my interest in maybe starting a small collection. Have read up on the different metals and noticed some online sites don't state what type of metal is used so I'm leary about buying. Any suggetions on how to start?

More than I can find...

Different brands, different uses.

Probably the most important one is an original Case V-42 with original scab.

I lost one bone handle Craftsman folder that I bought in the early 70's. I haven't seen it in 10 years so I'm sure its gone gone gone.

Awards Showcase

Like guns one can never have to many knives. They are a needed tool and a means for self defence.
