Just got a hand made Damascus, steel knife, custom made, read a few things here and have just a few ???? It said that the knife has over 200 layers of mixed steel it is pretty, and they gave a Harding chart but do not have it buffalo horn handle brass rives, looks nice and it is Sharpe, I am a horse shoer and have made a few things in my life not a knife as nice as this, is that enough steel for a good knife
The amount of layers does NOT really mean anything. as you have a "carbon homogeneous" blade in as little as 3 folds, (it takes a few more for the rest of the alloying elements to catch up. What matters is this. It needs to have AT LEAST .6% or higher carbon, Proper edge geometry, and above all else nailing the heat treat. when you mix tool steels in making Damascus this can be VERY tricky. Also with the LARGE influx of crap Paki Damascus that we've seen recently, it's imperative that you get your Damascus from a reputable American or European source. the crap paki stuff can have inclusions and delaminations not to mention a less than perfect heat treat.
