I've been using a custom "Beaumont" Bob Legler knife for a couple of seasons with good luck.

About 10 years ago my Brother-In-Law gave me a run of the mill, nothing special, inexpensive (read cheap...it is my BIL after all) Remington R-3, two-blade folder. It has a four inch clip point and a saw/guthook combo blade. I have to tell you, it's been one of the handiest pieces of hunting equipment I own. It holds a good edge and fits me pretty well. I think I'll have it for a long time.

Being a knife nut, I like to try out different knives during hunting season. I am also a huge fan of Chris Reeve Knives. This year I tried out the Chris Reeve Skinner known as the "Ubajane". I got it pre-owned but in excellent condition. New they are $295, but I got this one for $210, an real bargain if you know about CRK. I sharpened it up to a hair shaving edge on my spyderco sharpmaker rather easily. I then carried it all through hunting season this past year. I gutted my 2 does with it and skinned both of my deer along with helping to skin my fathers deer as well. So thats gutting 2 deer, skinning 3 deer and it was still arm hair shaving sharp. I was quite surprised. Being a huge CRK fan and knowing of their quality, I was even surprised that it did all this without getting dull. In the past, I have tryed the BUCK Skinner, BUCK Kalinga ( old version ), older schrade knives of different designs. The CRK hands down blew all these others out of the water. If you have the money, I highly recommend this knife. The Chris Reeve Ubajane. The knife is made from One Piece of steel. It has a hollow handle so you may store a firestarter, band aids, etc. ( I have a small victorinox in mine ). The sheath is built like a tank as well. This legendary knife was recently discontinued along with the whole One-Piece Knives line, so if your interested in one, I would not hesitate as when they are gone, there will be no more. Enjoy !!

The Legler Knives "Beaumont" model is a 3 5/8" blade drop point hunting knife. The current price of a hand crafted Beaumont with hand crafted leather sheath is $136.95. (if ordered as shown)This is not considered "pricey" in the area of handcrafted knives.
Hi Bob, I just perused your entire site. Very impressive. :)
So many choices. BTW, No, They don't seem to be that expensive. My Benchmade is in that ball park cost wise. ;)

Here's one I made in 2003 using walnut from our yard, cow hoof, and a Helle blade. It has finger grips and an indent for my thumb. The handle is a tapered oval, big, but more comfortable for me than the thin, skinny ones. It's been used many, many times since then. Sorry for the poor pic as it's a scan of an actual photo.

SCHRADE USA! (not made in China) NUFF SAID?
These are both high carbon blades (Old school), and will hold a razor sharp edge longer than a lot of the competitors. ;)
BTW, Those are Black spots due to the steels high carbon content, not rust or corrosion.

Bought this skinner at an outdoor trade show in Fresno,CA years ago when I lived there. Cannot remember the maker but it's elk bone with a surgical steel blade and is not a chinese or paki made item. It is pretty sharp and I used it to skin a deer..not bad for $45.
