This is my favorite Elk knife, which usually means skinning in the field. It's ATS34 steel and the shape works well for me. I carry a Wyoming Saw for the really heavy work.
I have this cheap little skinning knife my Mom got me for Christmas several years ago. When I got it and looked at it I thought there was no way this thing would be of any use, but I stuck it in my pack and the next fall when I shot my buck I pulled the thing out just so I could say I used it. That cheap little knife made skinning that buck a lot easier. I have had that little knife for several years now and have skinned many animals with it. I recently found them for sale on Amazon and plan to buy a couple more. Amazon.com: RUKO Thumb-Style Stainless Steel Skinning Knife with Synthetic Leather Sheath (4-Inch): Sports & Outdoors
I've had a old Buck 103 skinner for more years then I'll admit. It's great for holding an edge and touches up easy. They still make that knife today if it's the same quality or if they changed the steel in them I don't know. For all I know the new ones might be made in China. I have other skinners which I couldn't tell you what they are it's been so long. They are in the trailer at our hunt club.
