This was a tough one, since I grew up hunting in the woods of Eastern Washington with a model 94 in .30-30. I love that gun (still have it) and it was perfect for those overgrown woods.
However, I marked "bolt action" because that's what I use now, since I hunt areas that offer longer shots. Still, I love how light and fast that lever-action is.

Semi auto for me. These days nearly all of my deer and hog hunting is with some sort of AR.

A Ruger No. 1 Light Sporter in 308 Win would be a great rifle for deer. Or even a Medium Sporter in 45-70.

In IL we arent allowed to use rifles, so i prefer my Remington 1100 12ga with a slug barrel and 4x scope. The semi auto really helps eat up some of that recoil before it makes it to the shoulder.

I had to vote lever because my #1-RSI has a lever on it.

Mine is a Model 88 Winchester Lever action in 308 with a 3x9 scope. That model was discontinued in 1973 and mine has been with me since 1971. I have strayed with bolt actions in various calibers such as 280 Remington, 7 Mag, 338 Win. Mag , 300 Winchester Short Mag, 243 Winchester but the only centerfire rifles in my safe at this time is the Model 88 and a winchester trapper in 45 colt

Earlier in this thread I mentioned that my wife loves her Ruger 44 magnum Carbine.
Well here's the reason why. 2 Shots...two kills this week at a Game Ranch in Missouri.
#1 is a 300 plus lb Feral Hog and #2 a large Whitetail Doe.
BTW- She used her "Easter Bunny Cammo outfit" which she wears to work also...Nurses scrubs. Confused the hell out of the hogs...some ran..others like this one just stoof there watching her...til one round in the ear at about 50 yards did it in. The guide coached us on each shot. She used my walking stick for a gun-brace here.
Full report on this adventure will be coming soon, on it's own thread. BUT The 44 Mag Carbine is a winner for her !

Although singleshots aren't in the list my no.1's are all I use. 1A in .270 is first choice. Bought a .257 bob last year to try but my lovely bride talked me out of that one. They are a lever gun but the speed facter isn't there. But I love the challenge of only one bullet. And "knock on wood" that hasn't been an issue.

BOLT, BOLT, and uh BOLT! I have used levers and pumps occasionaly, but I prefer bolt-actions. I primarily use my Ruger M77 in .270 Winchester for deer hunting and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

No option for all of them?
Honestly, as long as I'm familiar with the rifle, I don't think it's action type would phase me in the least.
Well, I guess single shot would be my least favorite or desirable, but it's not an option either so no big deal either way.
For full disclosure, unless you count paper, clay and steel, I don't hunt, not because I'm against or something crazy like that, just no need for me.

I'm with Beerman and sham357. Ruger RL in .308 can take all size deer in NA (even elk and moose within 100yds) and one piece stock in inherantly more accurate for distance than 2 piece stocks of lever actions.

in my neck of the woods where I grew up (rural North Western PA) lever actions are very popular. Light, handy and good for quick followup up shots in brush and short range situations. Mine's a Marlin 336C............... taken several deer with it over the years
