I gotta take it easy on some of the guys. When he was alive, my father in law would spend months planning for the elk hunt. He ordered maps from the Bureau of land management and had everything all planned out. He bought a large tent for the camp and I still have half a dozen of his canvas cots. He built a camp stove out of a 30 gallon drum and I still use that to heat the wood shop. He built wooden boxes for everything from his portable kitchen to the generator. He couldn't walk too far so the guys would set him up at a place where they could try to drive elk to him. Since he was disabled, and couldn't work, planning for the annual elk hunt was one of the joys in his life. Really can't fault him for that.

I'm sick of the ATVs. I think I am the only Minnesotan who doesn't have one.

Thanks for sharing memories of your Father-In-Law. Those are great memories. This kind of planning is just good common sence. Having a well laid out camp is a real joy & makes the hunt a lot of fun as well as easier.
Thanks
Frank

I reckon I'll just stay downwind of the deer and upwind of the fellers bathed in deer urine.

Shoot...out at dad's farm, we just crawl up in the stand built between 2 large trees and wait! Even with an east wind, the deer will walk their morning path to within 50' of us before they make their turn and walk sideways to us for another 75'. Take your pick!
The last deer I go there I stopped by for lunch and we saw him come up from the river bottom and walk around the back side of the pond. I bagged him wearing 'business casual' from beside a pine tree in the front yard...that buck didn't know, or care, what I was wearing!
Oh, and I'm still shooting with the Mossberg 500 20GA I receive as a Christmas gift 30 years ago! It's now sporting a 24" rifled barrel and scope, but with sabot slugs...that thing's ridiculously accurate at those ranges!

The deer sure are smarter these days, they'll cross the road and stop to look at you from right behind the tree with the posted sign. As if to say you can't shoot me, I know how to read.

Yup, I think I'd go a bit crazy if I got that one. Good for him.

The main reason I get off the porch to deer hunt is mama isn't very keen on being wakened with a gun going off right below her bedroom window. Sometimes I'll even put boots on when I leave to house.
