I used to think that I liked to squirrel hunt. I realized that I have no interest in hunting ...I just like walking around in the woods with a gun in my hand. There is something soothing about it. . |

I bought a Marlin model 795 ( same as the model 60 except it uses a detachable magazine ) because it's half the price of the Ruger 10/22 and it's a little more accurate because of the micro grooved barrel. The only downside is that no reliable high capacity magazines are available that I'm aware of. I can hit a dime at 50 yards with my $20 6x32 leapers scope resting on my $20 leapers bipod. I bought the Marlin 795 when it was on sale for $125 plus the $25 mail in rebate means it only cost me $100.

As much as I love my 10/22 and my Marlin Glenfield 60, I've got to go with my RWS 34 and 48 spring piston air rifles. First, they are so quiet that the other squirrels don't know that they're being hunted. At 900 fps. for the 34 and 1100 fps for the 48 there is plenty of penetration for squirrels. With proper shot placement and the right pellet they drop like a rock. Finally, if you live in a low density neighborhood (one house per acre) you can hunt right in your back yard and help control those pesky little tree rats. |

I used to go squirrel hunting with my dad back in the 60's and had a blast. I was introduced to squirrel hunting with a single shot 410 and then moved up to a single shot 22. No scopes back in them days as eyes were damn good. About 25 years ago, I went to hunt them critters again for one day. But this time I used a Ruger bolt action 77/22 with a Burris scope. Never a squirrel to shoot at that day.
I do have a 1022 and I believe it would be a fine squirrel gun, but just go with the 10 round rotary mag as there is no need for a BX25 when it comes to hunting.
As for scopes I would recommend the Nikon Prostaff series for the money. I like them much better than the Burris and Redfield scopes.
Enjoy..

+1 on the Prostaff Rimfire. Have four of them on various guns.

I had a 22lr fly past me once and didn't care for it. I'd rather shower people with shot. 20 gauge, full choke works for me.

I just put together a rifle for squirrel. I went with a 10/22 compact and a cheap little 4X15 Revelation scope that I basically got free for buying a 64 standard for 40 bucks.
Reasons I went with the 10/22.
1 I love Rugers
2 They have a good rep
3 The main reason for getting the 10/22 is the availability of parts. Everything from factory made 25 round mags to the ability to upgrade basically every other part of the gun.
I got the compact (even though I am a taller guy) pretty much for the 16" barrel but it also has NICE factory fiber optic sights that almost make me want to ditch the little scope and it's just a little lighter and easier to handle.
Have not shot any squirrels yet but have put 550+ round of assorted brands/types through it including some stingers and could not be happier, shooting it has even convinced my friend to get one for his squirrel gun.
