I am using a Tasco 3x9 40mm scope can will pick the ear off a squirrel at 50yards. I have embarrased several guys at the range who were shooting much more expensive .22s. I like my Ruger but I love my Marlin.

To all those suggesting Marlin I'm curious if your gun predates the Remington buyout and their plant closings and moving that started in '08, sadly it's been well noted in other threads and other forums that the quality dropped since then and I haven't heard if that has been recovered yet. The OP wants to buy new and as much as I love my old Marlin I just can't recommend a new Marlin until I've crossed over that threshold myself.

10/22 is great but if you have a little extra money to spend the browning buck mark rifle is outstanding.

I'll put my 2 cents in......Ruger 10/22 or a Savage MKII of some flavor. Both with a Nikon Prostaff Rimfire BDC 150 3-9x40mm mounted on it.

For me, the best squirrel gun is a Browning SA-22. It's a breakdown 22 that is very light and accurate. I don't even use a scope because of the accuracy of the iron sights. However, it is a little more expensive.

Looks like changed trigger. I have'nt tried one yet mines older type.

Fungun, my Marlins are old, 60's vintage Marlins, including my 39A and they are great guns. Yes, I've heard the internet moaning and groaning about the Remington buyout, but haven't tried one of these "Remlins", myself. I'm going to keep an open mind, though, given that internet discussions can be a bit distorted at times. The new Marlins I have checked in stores don't appear to be any better or worse as to wood and metal fit or smoothness than some of the Marlins I saw back in the 90s.

I'm a huge fan of Marlin lever guns so I do very much hope it's all sorted out. I'll have my own personal evaluation probably later this year when I pick up their stainless big loop in 45-70. Might be a little much for squirrels though |

+1. Love my Henry. I use it on chipmunks with 22 shorts and it is very quiet.

I've bagged hundreds of squirrels with a Remington 581. Gave the rifle to my niece recently because she wants to hunt this year. My next squirrel gun will be a Marlin 39A.

My favorite squirrel gun was my S&W 22/32 kit gun. It had a 4" barrel and was very accurate, Not only was I able to get head shots at typical squirrel ranges, but a friend of mine who used it was able to shoot it equally well. I know the OP asked about rifles and scopes, but I really liked that revolver. I also like the older Marlin Golden 39A. The rifle handled all kinds of .22 ammunition from CB caps to high velocity stuff.

My 10/22 with see through rings and a simmons 3-9x40 scope and a 25 rd magazine with the steel feed feed lips. I almost cant miss a squirrel or rabbit with that gun.

CZ 452 is absolutely the finest, most accurate .22 I've ever owned. 5 shots into 3/8" at 50yds with CCI Greentag. Just too pretty to beat up in the woods, so I moved 'er on to someone that'd appreciate 'er more.
Marlin 39A is the epitome of squirrel gun to me. My '59 shoots lights out & handles like a dream. I'm sure it'd outshoot my 60 if I could bring myself to put a scope on that classic beauty. I'm right-handed/left-eyed & really struggle with the buckhorn type sights. Maybe a Skinner peep....
