I purchased a Savage 93R with the stainless bull barrel and laminate stock. The first time I shot it I thought there was something wrong with it. I shot 3 rounds @ 50 yrds and only had one hole in the target. At 100 yrds if I do my part it will put them all withing a dime sized group.

Took the Savage out for a plink and test fire yesterday....was a little disapointed couldnt get it to group as tight as what i think it should do,i was using cci and hornady 17 grn ammo would get it grouping then it would wander and have to many fliers....there were however a few variables it was quite breezy, and i was a little rushed for time....also when i got back home and gave it a clean i noticed a slight rattle and after investigation found the two main stock bolts were a little loose(not real loose just got around 3/4 turn out of each one)....i also re tightened the scope mounts and bases....the guy i bought it off reckons she was zeroed and shooting MOA so i didn't want to touch anything till i did a range check....so hopefully it will now shoot a little tighter....for you guys that already use one of these a couple of questions
firstly with the 17s just how sensitive have you found them to wind??and with a std barrel how many rounds are you getting before you encounter a little "heat drift" obviously a bull barrel wont be as effected by heat but i would be interested to have a comparison.
cheers KIWI.

Just read this in one of Chuck Hawks articles Compared: .17 HMR Varmint Ammunition
Incidentally, in a 10 MPH crosswind this bullet will drift 3.3" laterally at 100 yards, and a whopping 8" at 150 yards. Wind drift is the .17 HMR's Achilles heel.quote Chuck Hawks.
Keen to hear on wind problems as many varminting areas over here arent without there fair share of wind i am wondering if i should have maybe gone to a .22wmr.?????
cheers KIWI

I have a .204 Ruger M77 MkII bull barrel and it took about a box for groups to tighten up.
Although, considering the difference in velocity, the same may not apply to a 17. (This things's spittin' a 40gr Ballistic tip at 3980fps)
I was looking at the .17 when I stumbled across a deal I couldn't pass up. Some guy had won the M77 at a DU dinner and didn't want it. He traded it in at a LGS. They had to sell it as "used" though it had never been shot. Got it for $500, so the .204 won out.
I've shot the 17, loved it, and probably would have bought one if not for "offer I couldn't refuse".

Tried my other 17hmr out on the weekend its a New England sportster bull barrel i just had it recrowned and threaded for a suppressor i am pleased to say that it looks like its going to be a tack driver i mounted a Millet 3x12AO on it and it seemed to like the Hornady XTP 20 grners Achieving some pretty respectable sub MOA groups first time out since the barrel work was finished.....just gotta decide whether i need two 17s....i think the NE sportster though a little heavier with the bull barrel may have edged the Savage 93RFSS out of a place in the gun vault whilst there is nothing wrong with the Savage that stainless std barrel starts to walk when hot and it heats up pretty quickly(around 3 shots)....the little single sportster definitely has character and i don't mind a single shot configuration....there kinda cool.

Kiwi, had a friend get badly hurt two summers back and was unable to shoot a high power rifle, used a .17 HMR to kill a buck whitetail at 100 yards with 1 shot, yet some people tell me it's not powerful enough to kill andthing bigger than a raccoon! I have a friend that regularly hunts coyotes with his to use as scientific specimens with minimal damage and the .17 works with correct shot placement. We have learned that even on a trapped coyote the bullet is too light to relyably penetrate the skull and it doesn't have enough shocking power to kill them with a poor hit like a .22-250 or a .243 but thats asking quite a bit out of the little guy. Shoul be a holy terror on your rabbit population! As always, enjoy in good health my friend!

Cowboy | Cheers for the info Cowboy always good to hear from my good friend from the big sky country in Montana....yep i am looking forward to getting down to our Kiwi big sky country on the central plateau and putting that little .17 to work on some big red hares and rabbits.....should be fun....the forestry trails we hunt deer on are usually well stocked with Hares and rabbits ....hence the suppressor on the .17.....dont want to spook the real quarry which is deer ...but hey if they aint playing ball then it is a great way to spend some time varminting...i guess i could of suppressed the .22 hornet CZ but its such a nice rifle i really didn't want to play around with the crown. stay safe mate

Good luck! | Yep suppressors have been in vogue here for a few years now ....i have had them on everything from .308s down to .17 and 22s....currently i only have my rimfires suppressed as where i am using my centerfires sounds not an issue and my .223 and my 7mm08 x bolts are shooting well and i dont want to play around with the crowns also overbarrel suppressors arent cheap and can cost as much as another rifle heres a couple of links to two of our leading suppression specialists.cheers Cowboy

Over a year ago, I had brought home 2 of those Savage .17HMR rifles. I must say thay shot groups well under 1/2 inch 7 days a week come rain or shine.
Now just don't let the wind blow or you may as well go home for the day. Now at 50 yards one could allow for the wind but out there to 100 yds, it was almost imposssible to get the job done. I did shoot on twice and hit fox out back in the pigeon loft area. The fox went down, left a puddle of blood and then got up and trotted off like nothing happened. Darnest thing I ever saw mind you. I then shut the door on the .17's.!!!
I simply after 3 months or so, picked them up and traded them off on a pair of Savage .22mags. I have not been sorry I done so. I have killed coyotes at 50 yards using the 50 grn bullets by Federal. They don't shoot small little 3/8 size groups at 50 yards like the .17-HMR's did but they do well enough to take out the coons, fox etc.
