Take a look at the ballistics of the 7.62x39 round as compared to the 30-30. You only give up a few fps and 20-30 gns of weight, but you get it in a more aerodynamic bullet. Nobody calls the 30-30 unethical if it is used within its well known limits.

The 7.62 by 39 will work fine for deer, Paco Kelly has a good write up on Lever guns.com. But If I had to choose it would still be 270.

The article is unintended consequences, it talks about bolt guns in 7.62 x 39 but its still good. It seemed like there was another too but I didn't see it.

Opinions run-amuck, but I align with the hunter vs. shooter. Particularly a newby to the business of "hunting".
I would first get a good reliable and quality bolt action, and the .270 Win M77 is such a gun. I think the jury is still out on the "American" but then what I have read so far says it should be a good gun choice. The .270 Win is a bit heavy for vermin in my view (loud too), but some use it, just right for deer size, and some would feel a bit too light for elk, but there are legends who say otherwise. Shot placement and bullet selection are key but the .270 Win is a pretty versatile caliber. Learn to hunt up your game, learn to shoot the gun, and you will be successful and enjoy your "hunting" more than shooting' up the country side. Too tempting in my view to "pull down and pull off" shots, most that are wasted, and detracts from "hunting." My story, and I am sticking to it, but please get the hunting part down, and well the rest will follow.

I passed on that M77 due to condition and am really eying the American in 270 Win as my first and due to the fact Hunting may not be my thing.

Good luck with it, WhiteBreadLife. I'm betting it has a very good trigger.

Go with the 270. More versital than the 223. 223 is too light.
