With the Peltor the squirrels can sound like a herd of elephants.

I don't really know much about hunting but my opinion is to wear atleast something plugs, muffs or both. I have tenitus from my time in service from not wearing plugs all the time, needless to say it wasn't a good idea to shoot an AT4 without wearing my plugs. Oh how it would be nice to go back in time and correct my dumb mistakes maybe I could hear better today.

I have a set of Howard Leigh electronic ear muffs I wear when hunting (except when I'm using a .22 rifle). Yes, it looks dorky, but I can still hear what my teenage sons are saying behind my back.

I know a lot of people (about 99.9% of the people I hunt with) who don't bother with hearing protection (except when we're hunting desert rats) because you're not exposed to very many shots (sometimes, not even one) on the average hunting trip.

I'm a nut about hearing protection because I have permanent tinnitus (ringing in the ears) from being too close to an explosion when I was in the service. Since then, loud noises make the tinnitus worse.

I have deer hunted with a .357 and. Then a .44, i keep my muffs hanging where my bow would hang during archery season then just like bow hunting, grab them and lay them on your lap at the first sight or sound of a deer. Although not quite as effective, i have just slid them on over my face mask during those colder weather hunts.
