Favorite hunting caliber

It depends on the game you are after, of course, but I am curious what caliber you do most of your hunting with. Here in the Southeast, hunting whitetails, I favor .243 or a .270. Both good short and long range, neither too little or too much for our North Florida/Georgia/Alabama deer.

I hunt mostly tight woods with a 44 Magnum carbine. 30-30 is also a caliber I've used. I'd love to have a .243!

I seldom hunt anymore but, when I did.....the .270 Winchester was my caliber of choice.
I will bring down most anything you will encounter in North America. It is perhaps one of the most versatile calibers particularly for handloaders. It is deadly at close ranges and flat shooting and accurate for long range kills. What's not to like about it?

I started out with a Marlin 30-30 then went to a Remington 270. Now hunt with a Malin 45-70.

The three that have taken the most game over the years .243 WIN, .270 WIN., 7MM RM MAG.I try and hunt with a different rifle caliber each fall. But those three have been used the most.

A good .270 is hard to beat! But I'm been on a 6.5mm kick since 2008. Using a 260 Rem, 6.5x55, and now a 6.5 creedmoor. If I had to choose only one caliber for deer in the southeast, it would have to be the old .270 Winchester loaded with old cup and core bullets has been the fastest killer of deer I've ever used.

My 10/22 for all small game. Bigger game I generally use my compound bow.

I would have to agree with you Cass. There's just something about the 243 although I find myself thinking about a 270. Growing up, my favorite writer was Jack O'Connor who was a staunch supporter of the 270.
But thank goodness we live in a country where one can buy most any caliber/action type he desires. When one gets right down to it, it's all about personal preference/choice.

.30-06 Springfield is my preferred caliber. I live in Alaska and a .30-06 is generally considered sufficient for most game up here and a decent all-around cartridge. In brown bear country, I would probably opt for a .300WM or .338WM though.

I'm going with .30-30. I have killed deer with my .30-06, but the .30-30 has always worked just as well inside 100 yards, where the majority of my shots are. Handgun caliber is probably .44 Mag at modest velocity.

The .243 is mostly a varmint caliber out here. I do not even own one. My rifles start at .257 Roberts and go up to 9.3mm. I use the Roberts mostly for coyotes.

My "Meat Gun" is .300 Savage.

I've taken a few deer with other calibers and means (bow & crossbow), but the vast majority have dropped to my Model 99.

Anything slightly larger like coyotes is 204. Whitetail deer is the only big game I go after. 7mm-08 and 6.5 Creedmoor are the "biggest" rifles I own for that.
