35 whelen is my go to for big game however, I believe the 308/30-06 are probably the best all round cartridges realistically.

That's the way. Put it down with authority. 30.06 may be seen as

overkill for some of the smaller animals, but when you range from

Deer, Coyotes, Bobcat, Wild Boar, feral cats, to wild dogs, you want to

be sure you are going to knock it down. A proper hit makes them drop

like a sack of potatoes. Also good for defense against the occasional

bear that passes through...

Here in SC and NC where I hunt I usually carry either my Ruger Guide Gun in 375 Ruger or one of my Marlin 45-70's...because there is no such thing as "overkill".
Here is my Ruger Rig (good to 500yds) shoots a 270gr bullet at 2600fps and is a laser!

Here are my Marlins, usually one of these, but lately I've been using the GBL. And of course they are all JM stamped Marlins!

I could hunt just about anything available to me with a .204 Ruger and 6.5-06. They have it all - zippy high velocity performance (.204R) or with 6.5-06 large number sectional density (140 grain) or zippy ballistic performance with 100 grain loads.

I'm hearing about some folks who are having impressive

luck with 9mm carbines, at up to 120 yards.

The first rifle, that I bought for deer hunting, was a Ruger M77 in 270.
Years later, I was going to try elk hunting in Colorado, and bought a Ruger M77 MKII in 300 Win. Mag.
Following that, I bought a 243 Handi rifle, for my Son. Followed by a Savge AXis Ducks Unlimited 243.

For Christmas 2016, I bought myself a Ruger American Preditor, in 6.5 Creedmoor.
And, I must say....they are all excellent deer cartridges, in my opinion.

Please don't make me choose a favorite!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love the 30 caliper...30-06 and .308 for Deer here in Missouri. If I ever get the opportunity to hunt Bear I think I would use my Ruger .300

270 win is probably my favorite, Ive taken whitetail, muley and elk with it.

That said, I have (5) 30-06's.

Carried my 336 Win Mag on an elk hunt 2 weeks ago in New Mexico. I am not recoil sensitive and the gun shoots 225 gr. Barnes Vortex wonderfully. Alas, no shot opportunities. Maybe another time. Great gun but way more than is needed or appropriate for my Southeastern whitetails.

Hey Friends! Caliber is the most important thing which you need to play hunting. Everyone has its own experience. So the truth is that there is no one has correct answer in general for hunting caliber, as the best all around hunting caliber is really subjective based on personal experience and preference.

I usually don't post alot but since nobody listed my favorite I will. It's .358 Win and my 2d favorite is .280 Rem. Killed a lot of deer and black timber elk with those although I've used many other calibers. The .358 is, by far, my favorite. At my age I don't really hunt big game any longer so I sold my Browning BLR take-down .358 to a fellow on the way to an Alaskan moose hunt. He did well. I do still apply, once every year for a drawing for an elk hunt in a WMA nearby. They only choose one a year so I'll probably never get drawn. If I do tho' I'll dig my last centerfire rifle out of the safe and sight it in. It's an unfired Ruger M77 Frontier Rifle in .358 Win. I've had several people try to buy it but I haven't relented yet. I'd like one last elk with that caliber.

.30-06 is likely the best all-around, most versatile rifle round. There are many bullet types, weights, and loads available. Having said that, I love a nice .243 rifle.....
