What is on your side when out rifle hunting?

Alright folks,
I have posted similar questions in different parts of the Ruger forum but want to ask all the hunters.

I will be doing most of my outdoor activities in the LP of Michigan or in Florida once I get my BS in Zoology next year.

I was thinking a nice 4-6in full lug SS GP100 in .357 magnum would be a great gun for the areas. Any bear I would ever have an issue with would be small black bears. I could also use 38spl when target practicing or plinking. It would be my first handgun, but have been shooting shotguns and rifles since I was about 5 or 6.

So what about you? What do you carry when outdoors? What caliber? Where do you live? Have you ever had to use it?

That one would work fine for you for both 2 and 4 legged meetings. I carry that most of the time, but back country I opt for my RRH 5.5 .41 mag.

Tracer is an unknown quantity at this point
On my right side is a GLOCK model 20 in 10mm cal and on my left side is a set of skining knife's and in my boot is a 9 inch blade carbon steel bowie knife. In the Ozarks, they call em boot knives.

In upstae PA, when hunting (deer), I carry my 6" .41 Mag Blackhawk, though I used to carry (and still do, occasionally) my 4 5/8" .357 Blackhawk.

When downstate, in the Spec. Regs areas (where hunting is shotgun-only), I carry my 2.5" .357 SP101. That's so there is not a doubt that I'm not hunting with the handgun.

During muzzleloader season, for kicks, I carried my P90...again, so there was no doubt that I wasn't using the handgun to hunt.

Good points brought up for when in shotgun/bow only areas.

As no handgun carry allowed in NJ, nothing when here. Shotgun or muzzleloader only.

When I go to PA I have a .44 Redhawk to carry. Honestly its really the only reason I go hunt there, having that opportunity. Have not got anything with it yet, but I'll keep trying.

And the Wardens checked me this past season during the late season in Bucks Co. Glad it was my SP101 and didn't have to answer any questions about it.

PA law states that if you have CCW, you can carry it hunting, as long as it's not a handgun that one would consider a hunting gun (paraphrased).

Over here in Maine there is not much of a reason to have a side arm most of the time,or any time in the 30 years I have hunted. If there is a lot black bear sign where I plan on hunting then maybe my 357 BlackHawk but I have carried my Walther P22 a lot more and carried nothing but my hunting rifle a lot more then that.It had always made more sence to me to swap the wieght of a hand gun for extra munchies, apples or salted peanuts or something along those lines......

A GP100 in either 3", 4", or 6" depending on my mood and method of carry. I only do the 6" in a shoulder rig.

125 grain bullets are built for expansion, not deep penetration. On a nice broadside shot through the lungs it would be great.

On a bear or boar coming at you head down you want to penetrate through a lot more meat. Move up to 158's.
