Friend's First Buck

My best friend just started deer hunting a few years ago when he learned how good venison was to eat. He has taken several good eating does the last couple of seasons, but he has tired of my teasing him about never having taken a buck. Last Saturday morning he dropped a little buck with a single Hornady 100gr SP from his Rem 700 ADL .243. This filled his "any buck" tag on his Georgia license. The best part of the day was when he had to watch a thicker horned six point (that was at least 30lbs heavier) walk around his stand during the evening hunt. He just had to look since it didn't have the 4pts > 1" on one side to make it legal for the "big buck" tag. I loved it! Welcome to the "woulda, shoulda, coulda" world of hunting. This aint fishin'...there's no catch and release with a rifle

Well good for your friend , I get ribbed all the time as well for not Horn hunting am too lazy wont even shoot a doe unless its close to the truck

Not trying to get off subject but do you think all the smoke we have been getting is affecting the deer? I can't get the smell out of my nose lately.

Whenever I'm asked about the best spot to shoot a deer my answer is "Near the road". The smoke from the fires has been terrible. Thankfully I hunt Turner County in S. Georgia. No smoke there. What was there Friday were temps in the 80's, gnats, and active wasps. Not things I expect in the 2nd half of November!

I noticed it is laying in the truck and hasn't been field dressed. What's the technique you use once you bag a deer in Georgia?

I was thinking the same thing. I have always field dressed right after it drops.

Tell your friend congrats on his deer.

Congrats to your friend.

But he shoulda cut the scent glands off the back legs 1st thing too.

Between that, and the guts still being in there, that thing is probably going to be a little gamey.
