How often should I rotate my magazines?

This is a discussion on How often should I rotate my magazines? within the Handgun Accessories forums, part of the Pistol & Revolver Forum category; Considering they are under spring tension, about how long should I rotate my loaded magazines? Or is this something I shouldn't be too concerned about?...

In the majority of opinions I've read, leaving them loaded is less harmful than the cycle of loading/unloading, flexing the wire each time. I'm inclined to agree, but I would shoot and reload them maybe every six months, just for the fresh ammo.

Some people just keep loaded mags without rotating, having separate mags for range use.

Other people always shoot their loaded mags at the range, and refill them, as a way of rotating use.

I have no need to keep any mags loaded, carrying a revolver. I rotate which mags I use at the range, just to even out the wear and tear on them.

OK, thanks. I just bought a Kahr CM9 which I intend to carry as an alternative to my revolvers, and wanted to know how long I can leave the mag loaded for, as I hopefully won't ever need to use it for SD. I also have a P95 for HD with mags that might sit for awhile as well.

I've heard that rotating the mags you keep loaded doesn't need to be done more often than once every 6 to 8 months.

However I was told it is best to rotate the ammunition loading order in the mag as constant pressure pushing the top round against the magazine feed lips can eventually cause some deformity to the case.

So when I switch ammo to a different magazine I make sure the top round get reloaded down in the stack.

I believe the usual answer to this question is that it's a lot folklore to worry too much about the springs. Materials and manufacturing abilities have improved to the point that spring aging is largely a thing of the past, to a point. Pretty much the same story as barrel break in for the average gun.

I think that point is now measured in years. I can't imagine why somebody would want to leave their magazines loaded for years but they must last UNloaded for years, just ask Uncle Sam.

I personally do rotate my rounds in my working mag. That is to say the +1 round that lives in the breach gets rotated to the bottom of the stack as I load/download my ccw every night.

I also shoot off that magazine's load each trip to the range and start with a new 11+1 afterward.

There's no exact science to this, to each his/her own.

Better check those rounds that go in and out for set back,

I rotate my mags one full turn. Otherwise they don't slide back in and the bullets are pointed at me.

sorry.
