| Show Your Single Action Holsters
I searched, and didn’t see a thread like this, so here goes. I’ve recently bought my first SA revolver, a Ruger Single Six and am considering a Blackhawk. I have no experience with holsters for these types of guns at all. Some photos I’ve seen leave the trigger exposed. Is this acceptable with SA Revolvers? I don’t even know where to start looking, so I thought I’d see if some of you could post photos of your holsters along with the brand and model of the holster. So, lets see your holsters.

I make holsters based on 37 years police experience. Concealed carry revolver holsters should cover all or the majority of the trigger guard to prevent firing while drawing in a tense situation. However, quick draw cowboy holsters generally leave the revolver's trigger uncovered because: 1. drawing and firing is faster and 2. as long as you do not cock the hammer before you point and shoot, the gun is safe in the holster with the trigger exposed. In other words, if you want to be a quick draw guy and have the dextrity to remember fo pull, cock, point and fire, in that order, leave the trigger exposed. Otherwise, get a holster that covers the trigger.

A search on Google will get you dozens of holster makers, single action usually equals Western style holster and there are a number of different styles but I would think that most of them have the trigger exposed. I've made several western style holster using Will Gromley patterns. Here are a couple of pictures, the first is a pair of Rugers, and the second is a 1851 Navy 7 1/2"Black Powder rig I made for my son-in-law. If your interested in making your own you can find plenty of help on the internet. Let me know and I'll pass on some websites. Will has an interesting website you might enjoy seeing some of his work. This Cowhide belt and holster came with the 44 mag (J P Sauer & Sonhs) I bought recently at an auction. It does not fit me, so it hangs in the gun cabinet. I haven't seen a cowhide leather set with the hair still there before. The belt fits a 48-53 inch waist. If anyone that size is interested we can discuss it via PM or email. The gun is NOT for sale. Reasonable offers considered. Bowenaj@aol.com

Hey Guys, I like your holsters!
Here are two that I've made.
This first one is the same one in my avatar. It holds my Super Blackhawk Bisley Hunter in .44 mag.
This second one holds my Single Six which is also a Bisley. (Ruger has discontinued these.) Because the bullet loops on the back of the belt are a booger to make for .22 LR, I went another way. I made a leather box which snaps close. It holds a CCI plastic 50 round container. It works really well, and doesn't look too bad either (IMO).
I haven't made any concealed carry holsters, but that's my aim. I've been studying designs for a while.
I love working with my hands, because all day long I work at a computer.

Only other revolver I own at this time is a S&W Model 19-3 in .357 and the holster for that gun leaves the trigger exposed. I’ve never been comfortable with it, but I can see where it would be ok, and common practice to leave the trigger exposed on single action revolvers. That will open up a few more options, but still, having any trigger exposed in a holster is going to take some getting used to.

Also, I wonder if the same holster would work for the Ruger Single Six and the Blackhawk, both with 5-1/2 -inch barrels?

Where did you get the pattern and did you do the sewing and cutting yourself?

Your other enquiry could be readily answered if you flick EPS an email. Quote:

I got this one from eBay for my Bearcats, unknown maker. Bearcat flap holster - Ruger Forum
Otherwise my Bearcats reside in the Ruger/Triple K holster, or a Hunter Snap-Off.
