Single Six Grips and Internal Lock

Ok. I知 confused. I recently purchased a new Single Six in .17 HMR with a 5 ス" barrel. I would like to replace the black hard rubber grips with some Rosewood grips. On the Ruger sight it says these grips are for guns without the internal lock. I had to remove the grips to see if I have the internal lock, and yes I do. I found the grips at MidwayUSA, and they say nothing about the grips working with or without the internal lock. No mention of the lock on the Midway site. One review on the Midway sight mentioned the internal lock as no problem.

Will these grips work on my Single Six with the internal lock?

Your single six has the XR3-RED grip profile on it. The lock has nothing to do with grips since the grip frame is .500" in width and thus wider than the lock.

The only problem arises on the new steel XR3 grip frames since they are only .437" in width and the lock at .480" in width is wider than the grip frame. Any flat backed grips on this frame need recesses in them to accommodate the lock.

Any grips that fit the regular Blackhawk or Vaquero or Single Six will fit your gun.

By the way, what Ruger is telling people about the wood grips not fitting guns with the lock is just not true. As long as it is the XR3-RED grip profile they will fit.

Thank you very much for the info. I just took the grips off again and measured the frame, and it is .500" in width and the lock is narrower. This opens up a whole new selection of grips, tho I like the rosewood grips the best.

Are there any markings on the frame that designate whether it is a XR3-RED grip or a XR3-grip? I could not find any.

A simple three inch square will tell you what grip frame you have. Just place one of your grips in it and it will fit like one of the drawings below. Notice that the XR3 grip frame also has the straight back strap while the XR3-RED back strap flairs out towards the bottom. That straight back strap is a dead give away for the XR3. Ruger's markings on their grip frames are there just to drive people nuts.

Thanks for your help. It痴 much appreciated. Now, I don稚 have to look at Just the Single Six grips. Opens the options.

Thought I would update this thread. I ordered the grips I linked to in my first post and put them on today. Since I have a studio setup with strobes, photographing the gun in the same position with the same light was easy and I was able to take before and after photos and combine them into one photo in Photoshop. The Rosewood Grips are much thicker than the original hard black rubber grips that came on the gun, and don稚 exactly fit flush in the front of the grip. The grips stick out from the frame enough so that I notice it. Feels funny. Might take a while to get used to. They do feel beefier tho, and I like that.

They look nice but you couldn't prove it by me that they are Rosewood. For one, they are laminated which means they are two different kinds of wood. Second, they just don't look like Rosewood to me.

Being a grip maker and dealing with a lot of different woods I've come to find out that any brownish wood where the owner is not 100% sure of it's species is automatically Rosewood. Must be 687 varieties of Rosewood.

I'm glad you're happier with them though. They do look nicer than the plastic.

You could always reshape the grips to fit the frame better and eliminate that problem, and then refinish them.

I ended up striping the semi-gloss polyurthane finish in order to reshape the grips, and then used oil & wax instesd of a poly finish.

Really like how you did the picture.

Looks a lot better than the black plastic!!!!

My hands like the grips from Bear Paw which are much thinner at the bottom.

Well, they were advertised as Rosewood grips on the Midway site, but when I read the reviews, there were some comments about receiving laminated grips instead. In reality, these are laminated grips, but I like the sound of Rosewood better. Normally, I知 not a fan of laminated grips, but these look ok. Not what I was expecting, but for the price, I値l keep them.

Thank you. Trying to be creative and only post one photo instead of two and I even like the way it came out so much, I made it my new avatar.

Those Bear Claw grips are some nice looking grips. Not cheap, but I値l bookmark that site for when I get a Blackhawk.

Thanks. I知 not good with range reports, but I have done a video, but have not uploaded the video yet as I wanted to add the new grip installation to the video. Did the grip installation video last night, and all I need to do is add that to the end of the video and upload to YouTube. I can post a link to the video here if any one is interested and there are no forum rules about doing that.

I can say that there is no recoil, but it is loud.

Don't get me wrong guys. I actually think they are the prettiest grips Ruger has put on their guns so far, even if they don't fit that good.
