Free spin mod.

Anyone ever done the free spin mod on a ruger by filing the inside edge of the top leg of the pawl so it will allow it to spin freely in both directions without ratching when the load gate is open.

My only reason is when loading and unloading if you go just a little to far you cant back up. You have to go all the way back around to get back to that chamber.

I had one of mine done and, from my viewpoint, it's a DANDY improvement for the new models. The new midsize .44 Specials have the best answer but the free spin is close in utility value.

I just took my blackhawk today and done a trigger job, polished the moving parts and filed down all the burs inside the frame. Installed a lighter trigger spring and an over power hammer spring. After I was finished I decided to do the free spin so I took it back apart and filed the pawl. Gun functions perfectly with the free spin. Only thing it effects is when the load gate is open. Debating on whether or not to install a hammer stop or not.

Might have to look into this on my NMBH .45 colt. Going just a hair too far is a real pain sometimes.

I've been doing the free spin pawl mod for many years and it works very well. I would recommend buying a new pawl and keeping the factory pawl in case you want to restore your Ruger. Here's what the shape of the pawl needs to look like:

I have all of mine set for free spin at the moment and really like it. I also agree with Iowegan on buying a spare if your model requires filling metal. The newer NVB frames can go free spin by just removing a small screw/spring/plunger section.

Today when I was showing off my free spin mod to a friend he asked if it would accidentally rotate back ways from what I had done to the pawl so I grabbed the cylinder and put pressure on it in the backwards direction as I slowly pulled the hammer. No it did not roll backwards but I did notice a small catch about halfway back when cocking the hammer. I've done this several time trying to figure out what is causing the catch. Its not really bad and it wont jam up and you can't even feel it unless im putting reverse pressure on the cylinder as I cock it. I originally thought it was because the corner of the upper foot was filed off caused the cylinder not to rotate as far before the lower foot made contact. So I painted the pawl put it in and cocked the hammer several times and the only paint removed was on top of the pawl legs. So idk what's causing the catch or even if it was there before and I never noticed it because I never put reverse pressure on the cylinder while cocking the hammer. Any ideas

singleaction 44. Ideas? Yes, don't put reverse pressure on the cylinder ... it wasn't designed for that.

Well I wasn't bearing down on it. But I was putting a little pressure on it. But not a huge amount. I might just be over reacting .
