Taylor Throating

So since I shoot cast bullets only and every ruger I own has thread choke to some degree I have decided to invest in a reamer to Taylor Throat them. I searched for a reamer that could be used without removing the barrel and didn't come up with anything. Just how hard is it to remove the barrel from a Ruger Blackhawk? Also if you do remove the barrel is there a torque spec that should be applied or should I just place matching index marks on the underside of the barrl and frame and then tighten the barrel back down until the index marks line up?

JaxCatm, Taylor throat reamers work exactly like a forcing cone reamer and don't require barrel removal. Clymers used to make them for Brownell's but they have been discontinued. You might try to contact Clymer and see if they can help. See: Clymer Tools Welcome - Gunsmith

Lowegan,

Thank you for the heads up. I contacted Clymer last week and they are indeed out of Taylor Throat reamers and don't plan on making more anytime soon. I have the 11 degree forcing cone reamer from Manson precision but have not used it. Maybe I'm crazy but on all three of my 44 Spl flat tops the forcing cone checked out just fne when I dropped the plug in. My only real problem is they all have moderate to severe thread choke and I would like to remove it. Without the Clymer tool being produced anymore it seems all the throating reamers I've found must be run into the barrel while off the frame.

Here is another way to remove / reduce your barrel constriction without removing barrel. Fire lapping.

Have a look at Beartooth Bullets > Home for some good barrel constriction info. They also have some supplies and literature for sale.

First, be sure your cylinder throats are at a correct size (ream if undersized), or you will mainly be polishing your cylinder throats, not the barrel and its constriction.

Then start fire lapping the barrel until all is well.

Although I have all their supplies, et cetera, I have not gotten around to trying it on a gun, but the process sounds promising.

Maybe others have some experiences, good or bad, to share.
