So Ive began the process of refinishing the barrel. Last week I glass blasted it and didnt like the look...as i recently stated..
So yesterday I went for it, and started the process of painting my barrel black. I know duacoat and all the other finishes are best, but for the time being this is what I have done.
degreased(i used acetone/alcohol)
sanded with 600 grit to open up the surface of the barrel
wiped down with acetone once more(the barrel was not that oily or dirty to begin with seeing as it was blasted a few days ago) I did contact a gunsmith and he said this process would work for my applictaion
wiped down, blew off with air.
Tape of both ends of barrel obviously. I put a clothes hanger through it to make it easier to move and spray. I covered each end of the barrel very well. Im talking painters tape stuffed in each end. There is no way paint will get in my barrel
I didnt do the oven bake before, but I did let it sit outside in the sun for a while, and hit it with the wifes blow dryer.
I then sprayed the barrel with self etching primer..followed directions on that can.(able to wet sand within 30 min after last coat)
wet sanded with 600 git for nice smooth surface
Then this morning put barrel in oven at 200 for about 15 min to warm it up a little.
Then began spraying with VHT caliper paint(Ive read a lot about rustoleum being , and the VHT working great)
Followed directions on can of VHT.
I let it sit on the back patio to let the sun bake it. Its still in the process of drying/curing. Im going to let it sit over night and bake it at 200 for 20 min tomorrow one more time.
As of right now the barrel looks amazing. Almost looks just like a powder coat. I am amazed at the way it looks. I am hoping it will last. I plan to let it cure for a while before I do anything with it(can says 7 days) Im thinking a little longer. Depending on what it feels/looks like tomorrow I may try to gently put it in the slide to get an idea of what its going to look like.
I know this is a "cheap" route, but these are things I had around the house and wanted to play around a bit. I have a little feeling it may chip or scratch when i shoot..anyone ever used this paint before? any info?
If it turns out not to work in the long run, Ill send it to get Ionbonded.
very shitty pic after about 20 min of last coat. And apparently I have a very DIRT ASS CHAIR.
