Rust....go away!

Hey guys, I have a Browning Auto 5 shotgun that love's rust. I mean every time I touch the gun it seem's to gain a little more bit by bit! I am the most
ridiculous person I know in terms of gun care, I wipe the whole shotgun down with a silicone and oil impregnated cloth every time I touch it. It leave's a nice layer of oil over the gun. I have surface rust all over the shotgun that I can't wipe off! I was thinking of getting it re-blued or may-be even nichol plated?? I hate the look of rust and want to preserve the finish of the shotgun. Is it possible for the protection level in the blueing actually wear out? What are your idea's...

Are you near the seacoast? If so try Ballistol as it neutralizes the salts. It sounds like something external is causing the problem like possibly high humidity where you are storing the firearm. I will use a gun grease on the externals for longer term storage on a couple of my blued firearms

I live in-land away from the coast or high levels of salt in the air. I have been looking into different gun greases for storage may be that could help with stoping the rust??

Awards Showcase

Eezox, Eezox, Eezox. I used to get rust on my shotgun until I started using it. It is by far the best product I have found to prevent rust on firearms.

You may have one of the Brownings with salt cured wood..Almost impossible to stop them from rusting. They used this process I think in the 70s. Be safe.

I used to use EEZOX, but I can't get it locally.
I'm currently using a product called
"LPS #2". I use it on my machine tools. So far It'ds been great for my guns.

Eezox is great stuff. Rennisance wax is almost permanent though! I use the Eezox on my shooting guns, and the wax on the "safe queens".

If it is in your budget try one of the rust resistant finishes like dura coat or such. I have dura coat on my remington 870 and it is great.

I would try Ballistol in that case. I remember reading of that and don't know if refinishing the stock would help.

Don't want to sound to ignorant, but I am not familiar w/ salt cured wood.

I do believe in Ballistol, it is great stuff. Especially here in Florida. What about RIG or RIG+P Grease for storage?

Thanks everyone for the insight! I think I have a decided to do something a little different, I talked to a shop owner in my area that does plating of all sorts for motorcycles parts, and household items. I love to set myself apart from the next guy by customizing my firearms. So I think I am going to get my Auto 5 nickel plated. Don't worry its made in japan not Belgium. I think this will solve ALL my rust problems for years too come. And plus how cool would a nickel plated Auto 5 look!

All of these are pretty good ideas. My thought is to do something very simple. Try replacing the silicon oil you use for some BP Blaster. It is a spray used to help loosen bolts, but it also leaves a nice coating that reduces the potential for rust. I recommend a light coat on a rag to wipe down the metal. Make sure you keep it off the stock.
