99/44 safety issue

Has anyone ever had problems with the safety button on their 99/44 or one of the original .44 carbines? Mine has non tension on it at all. It just simply slides back and forth from side to side. I'm assuming there's a problem with the detent plunger and/or spring. A buddy of mine has one of the older models and it has developed the same problem. The diagram in the Ruger manual isn't detailed enough for me to tell how the detent fits into the trigger mechanism. Any ideas?

These use the same as the 10/22 and 92/xx models. Spring and plunger pieces are the same and easily replaced. Tweezers and a tiny flat pick or file to hold it down while you slide the button across (smooth flat are up).

Thank you, sir. I'll try to round up the parts and give it a try.
