Free float Direct gas impingment

Hello everyone. My names Kevin and I am a new member on this forum. I own a Rugger 556 and I am in the process of installing free floating handguards. I ended up having to cut the barrel nut ( to the guy that said an 800 pound gorilla must have torqued it at the factory, I am now sure that is the case). I also reused the gas block and just cut it to make it fit. My quetion now is that the old barrel nut seemed to have a slot that fit the gas tube into the upper reciever and my new barrel nut does not. So my gas tube seems loose and I noticed that the upper reciever gas port is cut like an X. Im not sure if Ive purchased the wrong handguard/barrel nut system for this rifle or if I just slide the gas tube in loosley will it work? Will the gas just eacape through upper reciever gas port?
