Extractor Upgrade-MKIV

Although I haven't had any problems with my new MKIV, I decided to replace the OE extractor with one from TandenKross, the Eagle's Talon. I have had a few FTE problems in the past with a MKII and a 10/22. Replacing the extractors in these seemed to cure the problems. The OE extractor appears to be one of the few weak points in these firearms. Decided to replace the one in my new MKIV before it caused a problem. Very easy install too.

I just thought it looked like a good part. It got lots of good reviews. Do you not like stuff from TandenKross? It seems to be working very well. Have fired 300-400 rounds and not a single FTE.

I also just recently bought and installed the Tandemkross extractor in my 1980 Mark I Clark Custom. It was easy to install with the Pistol Pal tool. I function-fired the pistol and had no FTE but I did have some stovepipes with some old Rem. Golden Bullet ammo that I had around. I have lots of low velocity Lapua and Eley match ammo from my rimfire benchrest days which doesn't have enough oomph for the OEM recoil spring. I have ordered a replacement recoil spring from SGW that has a low power spring that will hopefully handle the match ammo.

I also bought a Tandemkross Fire Starter Titanium firing pin and was not so impressed with it. While I had no failures to ignite, the firing pin dimples were on the very edge of the rim and were very shallow. Significantly more shallow than the OEM pin, which I wasn't impressed with either. I guess I'm used to seeing the great ignition strikes of my Stiller and Turbo custom rimfire actions. I also ordered the new style OEM Ruger firing pin from SGW. For $4.35 I figured I'd see if it is an improvement over both pins, which isn't too high a bar. I should have known better; in rimfire benchrest the best and most consistent ignition is from heavy firing pins. Lighter firing pins mean lighter hits unless you significantly increase the hammer or firing pin springs.

It helps to check the fit of the extractor to see if it holds a round tight to the bolt face. You want the extractor to have to deflect some as the shell slides into place. The extractors are not all drop in parts, some need to be fit for best operation.
