New P95

Hey everyone, my dad purchased a new p95 at a gun show last weekend. the gun was used for the first time yesterday for my ccw class. I was using remington umc 115 gr. bullets and was having many failure to ejects and also on the last shot of the magazine the slide stop wouldnt catch the slide.

I am fairly new to handgun shooting so it is very possible that it was user error (though I have shot my brothers Taurus P92 and dad's Taurus millenium pro with no issues.) The instructor of the class told me that I should clean the gun and see if it has any effect. From everything that I have read about the p95 it seemed like people were having few problems with it so I was surprised when ours wasn't performing properly.

I am basically looking for any tips or ideas of what might be causing this. If the gun keeps acting would you bring it back to the dealer's store or just go through Ruger to try and get the problem fixed? Sorry about the lengthy post. Any help is greatly appreciated

Seriously, Clean the gun well and then take it to the range again. Then let us know how you made out. New guns can be very gunky from the protectants applied at the factory.

mdefl12 ... If you still have the issue this afternoon, I would recommend that you have an experienced shooter try it out. If they experience the same issue, you may need to get Ruger service involved (my guess is that it's a combination of not cleaning it prior to your 1st range session and "limp wristing"). Let us know how it goes.

I shot it yesterday and it went a little better for me. I didnt have any problems except that the slide still shuts after the the last shot. I think it isnt sliding all the way back becasue when I pull it all the way back and let go the slide stop catches it. My brother that shoots quite often was having failure to feed issues when he shot my gun. He has a Taurus P92 that he shoots. I made sure that I had a tight grip on the gun when i shot.

It sounds like you had an improvement. I don’t know much about the Taurus P92, I have never fired a Taurus pistol but I have fired the Beretta 92FS and I believe the Taurus you mentioned is the Beretta clone, which I have fired multiple times, and the two guns (P95, 92FS) handle very differently so handling may still be the issue with your brother. I found the P95 to have a stronger but still very manageable recoil.

BuckJM53 suggested you contact Ruger and this may be best. Call or e-mail them to see what they say about the slide lock.

So you know, there is a feature on the magazine follower than engages a feature on the slide lock and pushes up on it when the last round is chambered. When the slide recoils on the last round the spring on the follower pushes it up into the locking position. One or more of the parts associated with this action may still be a little “sticky” and, if you look closely at the unloaded weapon with the slide open and the magazine in and out you can see how this automatic slide locking mechanism works, You can also see what parts may need a little extra cleaning and lubrication. Don’t disassemble the grip frame components and don’t just pour on lube but add some oil/lubricant to these parts and work them for a minute or so and then wick off any excess lube. Go lighter on the lubes always!

One other thing is that the magazine may also be suffering from old or heavy factory lubrications/protectants so it would be wise to do a disassembly, clean and very light lube of those parts as well.

In any case, see what Ruger says and be patient as new Rugers do often require a break-in period before they settle into their reliable operation. Mine seemed to settle down at about the 200 round mark but it also took many rounds for me to get completely comfortable with the firearm. My P95 replaced my 1911 as my home protection weapon for many reasons but reliability, ease of use and the DA mode led the charge.

Good luck and enjoy that P95!
