I'm thinking of Magnaporting a semi auto. Does anyone have any experience with this, and does it change the amount of recoil enough to have to change the recoil spring to a lighter weight? Thanks for the help, Gary

Magnaporting

I've got an SP-101 .357, 2 3/4" BBL that I had Magnaported, helps some on the .357 BUT you get a BIG upwards flash out of the ports shooting in low light. Of course you still get about the same amount out of one that's not ported and this tends to screw up follow up shots. I know you're considering this on a semi but you didn't mention whal cal. pistol. The smaller the cal. the more magnaporting may affect function but most people I know that have ported semiautos haven't had any problem with low recoil problems. One thing to keep in mind with a ported gun is to make sure you shoot ammo that uses "low flash" powder if you plan to carry for any defensive use. If you don't hope you get them on the first shot because the muzzle flash will screw up YOUR vision thus affecting any chance of a quick follow up shot. Magnaported and compensated pistols both have this in common. If you're just planning on daylight shooting any ammo will do. Another thing to consider besides Magnaporting is just shooting ammo with a lighter load and a good hollow point such as Speer Gold Dots. Most "defensive ammo uses "low flash" powder and losing a couple of hundred fps with lighter loads isn't such a bad trade off because the reduced recoill and decreased muzzle flash allows you to get back on target quicker if a follow up shot is needed.;)

The gun is a P226 357 Sig. I have had several compensated pistols, made 2 myself and the flash is above the sight line. On the 2 I made I used the Venturi effect of tapering the hole to wider profile, it seemed to cut down on flash a lot.

Magnaport is a process which reduces muzzle flip (the force up) rather than recoil (back toward your hand). I'm guessing not.

If you have a significant amount of muzzle flip, you may have to alter your sights. Years ago I magnaported a Charter Arms .44 (cost almost as much as the gun). I had to remove about 1/4" from the front sight to get back on target at 15' - I was hitting the ground about 1/2 way to the target!

Thanks Ed, I was worried about that because I have Crimson Trace grips, I don't want to run out of adjustment!!
