Old models have the firing pin. Ruger has a transfer system that makes those old models safe to carry with every cylinder loaded (standard on newer models). Individuals have the option to have their hammers/revolvers converted to this system.

Both have a firing pin. What the conversion does is add the transfer bar. The transfer bar along with the stepped design of the hammer make it necessary for the trigger to be pulled, raising the transfer bar to a position allowing the hammer to impact it and transfer that impact to the firing pin. The Old Model design, that without the transfer bar, used a flat faced hammer which impacted the firing pin directly.

fixitfred will become famous soon enough
They refer to those models as "3 screw." It has collector value and some don't want it converted because of this. Some have it converted to add the transfer bar safety system for added safety.
