| Dumb mistake almost cost me
Last night I finaly had the chance to take the new LC9 out for a getting to know you session. Everything went well and I'm happy with the LC9 even with the worlds longest trigger pull.
However since I am not able to get to the range that offten I always take more then one pistol with me. In this case I also took my RIA 1911 .45ACP
I was shooting old odd ammo that I keep in a box, wad cutters, FMJ, lead ball and a few JHPs.
The dumb mistake on my part is I was just reaching into the box, grabing 6 rounds and loading the mags I had with me. I did not notice that at sometime I had tossed a .40 cal jacketed hollow point in there.
Yup it got loaded up in the mag and when I pulled the trigger on the third round I got a decent amount of powder to the forehead and a stove pipe FTE.
When I went to clear the stove pipe FTE is when I noticed I had loaded the one round of .40 into my 1911's mag. The case was deformed and split and wedged inthere pretty good.
I'll tell you what complacency has no place near guns. Now I will always look at every round before I load 'er up.
Leason Learned, I got lucky. Inspection of the 1911 does not show any damage!

I once shot 10 mm in 45 and cussed when the slide did not cycle. the 10 mm case was ruptured but ortehr than thart I was okay. I also learned never have 7.62x 39 and 308 oon teh same bench when shooting. yes I put 7/62x39 in a 308 and the gun did not fire but it was a bad jam to clear.

My little brother did the same thing with an AK-47. we were shooting the AK and an AR, loading both side by side.... He actualy caught himself loading the 5.56 rounds into the AK mag, and took them out till he hit 7.62... his mistake was not emptying the whole mag.... |

I can see how that could happen. Right now I only shoot 40 S&W in my semi-auto and 38 Special ammo in two revolvers. Not likely to be able to get those two crossed up. Even so, I keep the ammo in separate ammo cases.

I've almost made a similar mistake mixing up 9 and 45. I caught it before it got fully into the mag but prompted me to be a lot more careful and segregate the ammo boxes better.

About 18 months ago, I made a similar mistake. When I would shoot my LCP, I would frequently put a mag or two through it and then shoot something else for a while to give my hand a rest, then put another mag or so through the LCP, etc.
That day I was alternating between the LCP and my SR9 and had a box of .380 and a box of 9mm on the bench -- both Federal and the boxes looked almost identical.
After a mag of .380, I grabbed my UpLULA and unknowingly proceeded to load 17 rounds of .380 in the SR9 mag, then started firing. First round failed to eject...that never happened with my SR9. Racked the slide, fired the next round, same result. My first reaction was, "Oh, no...not a problem with my ever-so-dependable SR9!" I had noticed the recoil seemed unusually mild. After 8-10 rounds with the same FTE's, I finally realized what had happened. The .380 ammo wasn't strong enough to work the action.
With a sigh of relief and feeling somewhat embarrassed as a rather seasoned shooter, I learned a lesson that day: Never have any ammo on the bench that is not the proper caliber for the weapon I'm shooting.

That's one reason I wanna stick to just 2-3 calibers of firearms. A couple 22LR, a couple 9mm & a 5.56. No confusion haha

| I can see that with .380 and 9mm. While I have not seen 9 an .380 side by side to compare, I have picke up .380 occasionally and every once in a while I'll get a 9mm in the press that doesnt feel right when I go to size it. They are pretty darn close. Right now I have a .357, 9mm, .22s, .223, and 12ga so pretty impossible to mix any up. The worse I could do is shoot a .357 when I meant to put a .38spl in

I have always made a habit of keeping my leftover rounds in their original boxes until I finished the box up, even if there are only 5 rounds left in a 50 round box. Takes up more room in my ammo cabinet, but it prevents mixing the ammo up...better safe than sorry.

I load 38 special, 38 special +P, 357, 44 special, 44 mag, 45 Colt in both heavy ("Ruger loads) and in SAA light loads....have to be awfully careful at the range if I take several guns...I use sharpies on the cases when loading and everything gets marked and double/triple checked...I'd hate to put a heavy +P 38 special in an old loose Smith 36 or a really hot 45Colt in my Pietta SASS gun...probably not a kaboom but might really loosen things up.

When I'm reloading I always triple check the brass but one or two always seems to make it to reloading where I catch it.

Can never be too careful around guns AND ammo. I am lucky as of today. Fired my SR22 and noticed no ejecting of casing..racked slide and casing popped out with a nice indent on the side of the brass, not due to stove pipe or anything mechanical inside the gun as far as I knew. Other time was loading SR9 mags and noticed a bullet pressed too far into brass. ALWAYS look at your ammo while loading up mags!

I was doing some internet research about interchanability of rifle rounds, specifially .223 Rem and 5.56 NATO.
There was also a chart of "similar" rounds that could be accidently be chambered. One combination jumped out at me:
30 M1 Carbine / .223!
Got up and opened the gun safe & ammo cabinet. Compared the .223 round with the M1 Carbine. I could see how it would chamber . . . Carefully placed an M1 Carbine round in the chamber of the Mini-14.
It fit.
And it "headspaced" enough that it would have fired.
But that .308 bullet would have had a hard time squeezing down that .224 barrel!!
And I also realized that for that statement to have been there, SOMEONE had most likely actually done it!

I mostly shoot .357, .38 and .44 revolvers and its impossible to accidentally cross load those. The only autos I shoot on occasion are 9mm and .45 and my main rifle round anymore is .223/.556. My days of messing with 100 different calibers are over, I used to own 9mm Jap , 9mm Dutch, 10mm Italian , 11mm French etc and sold all those off....now I'm hesitant to even get a .41 Magnum since .44 Special out of my .44 Mag Rugers will fill the same "role".
