I remember very well. It was a Colt Python 6" bbl. belonging to gunshop owner Mike Chuisano (Mike's Gun Shop) located on the Bklyn. Qns. boarderline. Mikes gunsmith Bobby Guinta did the action, it was smooth as silk.
I began hanging around the gun shop learning neat stuff from Mike nad Bobby (it paid off in my later years) I was about 16yrs at the time.
We had a great relationship, one day Mike asks if I wanted to go shooting, he didn't have to ask me twice.
The range (indoors) was located on Long Island on Sunrise Hwy. in West Babylon. The instructions (fundamentals) given by Mike and Bobby and also what I picked up at the shop paid off.
I was scared out of my shorts but here I am with a worked Python. It was a bit unnerving especially with onlookers.
I fired wadcutter ammo and after getting over the initial shakes and flinching I settled in real nice. Mike moved the target out to 25' and began grouping my shots and cutting holes. It was a real ego trip; I felt great!
Now I'm hooked on handguns, but in NYC that isn't going too happen any time soon.
After graduating high school my family packed up and we moved to Long Island, and that's where it all started.
My apologies for my rant, but it brings back great memories and makes me feel like I'm back in my teens....I could only wish.....Carl

I do indeed recall the first time I fired a real gun.
It would have been about 1953 or so, and me, my dad, and his friend went out in the boonies to shoot a little. I don't recall what else transpired that afternoon, but I do remember shooting the friends' .38 Special revolver. As I recall it was blue, had about a 6" barrel, and I'm pretty sure it was a S&W. I also recall it had "stag" grip panels but I have no idea if they were real or imitation.
I was allowed to keep the empty cases from a dozen rounds we shot that day. I had them for many years but they went away sometime later.
Several years then passed before my dad started teaching me serious shooting with a .22 rifle borrowed from that same friend. It was a very old Marlin lever-action with an octagon barrel and homemade buttstock. The stock was made with a rather pronounced pistol grip, and the lever had been bent to match up with the stock. When I got older, I tried to buy that rifle from the guy, but he said it was earmarked for his first grandson. That was OK with me. |

Winchester single shot .22. Like someone else said earlier....went to the town dump out in the country, but instead of cans we shot rats! I was 6 yrs old. Hey us country folks have to make our own fun! Second was an old H & R single shot .410 that belonged to my uncle. By the time I was 8 I had my own .22 and my uncle gave me the .410. That started my obession! Still have my single shot .22. My Grandfather gave it to me for my eighth birthday. He bought it at the local feed/seed/hardware store. Still take it out and shoot it occassionally.

My cousin's 22 bolt action rifle. Long about 1958. We were and still are farm boys, at least at heart. He's gone to be with the Lord. Yiogo

I was seven years old in 1953. A family friend taught me to shoot his Colt SA .22LR. At the time, the gun seemed to be very large and very powerful. He made me a slingshot and we would shoot the expended shell cases with it. They whistled as they went. Great memories.

The first gun I shot was my friend's British .303 SMLE MkIII back in the early 70s. We were shooting at steel plates with armor piercing incendiary rounds and started a few small grass fires....made quite an impression on me!

| First Gun Fired...
Win 1906 .22, in about 1956 and it's hanging on my wall right now. Try this for size: I was 10, my older brother 13. We would take the .22 and my single shot pellet gun (which I also still have), tie them to the handle bars of our bikes, ride thru town (Homestead, FL), stop at the hardware store for a box of pellets and a box of .22's, ride to the dump and shoot rats! Can you imagine doing that in today's politically correct society? Other times we'd just ride out into the canal areas and shoot rocks and cans. My brother's gone, but looking at those two guns makes me think of him and smile. I think I'll have them put in my casket so we can shoots rocks and cans in Heaven.

Sorry, but Dad only shot a Beeman .22 pellet air pistol.
But for Me,
My first gun was a Ruger 10/22 1986' and she is still a great shooter never got rid of her, she is only 26 years old. I shot the crap out of that rifle.
The next year I bought a Mk.II 6-7/8" long tapered Barrel shot that one a lot too.
