New Naval Gun Continues Work Ups

Current naval guns have a Muzzle Velocity of ~2,650fps. This new bad boy is at 6,600fps. or Mach 5.5. To put that in perspective the Missiles the ships shoot are reported at ~Mach 3.5. The round can reach the horizon in just over 7 seconds and at that point is still traveling far faster than a 5 inch 54 shell leaving the muzzle.

You can see in the video they are working it up into a package that can be dropped into a ship. Earlier versions were much bulkier. You could put one in a tank but currently you would need a tank the size of a ship to generate the power and be mobile.

DDG1000 which is slated for 1st operational deployment of the system can generate 78 Megawatts of electricity.

nice. In a rifle size consider the flat trajectory of a 30 caliber 200 grain bullet at 55oo fps. I think we will need stronger bullets.

You know we keep making batteries smaller storing more power and improve capacitors so as things get smaller maybe in 20 years they can get to a person portable 30 cal.

They are already working on smaller versions for point defense to knock down incoming rounds and mortar shells ect on land.

On the flip side if you can boost the speed by a factor of 5 to 32,800FPS and you can hit anything on earth with a single cannon.

Here is a cool picture of armor plates and a rail gun this one is in 8,000 to 9,000fps class.

In the news yesterday was the new Russian Hypersonic missile that will leave our Navy defenseless.

They forgot to put these bad boys, hypersonic guns in the story. However with the speeds involved the ships will have be on full auto all of the time anything incoming over Mach 4. The first time the human crew will know there is an issue is when the rail gun starts shouting followed a few thousandths of a second latter by General Quarters sounding.

Or you have to have a drone up 24x7 to expand the horizon. You cannot stealth something moving Mach 4 plus. The wake it leaves plus the heat it imparts on the atmosphere will make it visible to a couple of types of detection.
