Smokey Joe will become famous soon enough
People who hate guns and are scared of them are referred to as victims

wow, just this saturday morning we had a rainout for our 14U travel baseball team, so decided to run to a local diner and let the boys have some off field fun and get some breakfast.

got on the subject of repairing broken glass on cell phones / i phones / i pads, etc. one of the dads beside me said a buddy of his had a cool table top mat that had an exploded diagram of the i-phones, which he used to do the disassembly, assembly process.

i commented that they have the same things for different guns. he looked at me and asked if i had one... i said i have several guns, but dont have any of the pads... and that i did not carry a weapon on my person.

he actually scooted his chair about 1' further away from me...

end of discussion, no further comments from him, or me - we moved on to the next topic.

i now know where he stands on the subject. no one else batted an eye or commented.

I was a gunsmith for 31 years. When attending social events, it seems there was always a few people that winced and walked away when they asked what my profession was. My wife told me to "feed them a line" about being a retailer. I told her .... "no, I'd rather not talk to someone that has preconceived notions about guns."

Whenever I get 'the look' when someone finds out I like guns I just ignore it. Me being pro-gun is none of their business just like them being irrationally afraid of them is none of my business. OTOH, if they're stupid enough to want to engage in verbal confrontation about it I absolutely guarantee they'll end up walking away frustrated. They can't win. I have logic, reason and facts on my side. All they have is emotion. They've lost before they open their mouth. I'm always very willing to educate folks that are genuinely open and curious about guns. In fact it's one of my very favorite things to do. I love teaching new folks how to shoot. However, I have absolutely no tolerance for 2A bigots and will not put up with their BS.

I do the same thing about my profession but for a different reason. I'm an airline pilot and as soon as people find out what I do for a living that's all they want to talk about. While it is fun to talk about me I get the same old questions over and over again and most of them are based on preconceived and erroneous ideas. These days when I'm asked where I work I usually just say I work over at the airport helping move airplanes around. They naturally assume I'm a ground handler and that's the end of that. If they ask what I do for a living I use the old cliche "I work with pressurized aluminum tubing.". That usually works to kill the conversation before it starts.

If I ever met a gunsmith at a social event that poor guy would have to physically walk away from me to get me to shut up. Either that or he'd have to bill me by the hour because I'd love to pick his brain for the entire event. I know, I know. I don't like it when someone pesters me about my job but this is different. We're talking about guns!

Dont even go there with them. You cant fix stupid.

If it was me, and the subject of the party comes up with this person again,, Id make a point of telling them in front of others, in an appologizing manner, that if I had any idea MY invitation was going to offend them, I WOULDNT have done it, I appologize, and WONT be doing it again.

And that would only be done to show them WE ALL can have a great time WITHOUT THEM, and I could care less what they think.
^^^^^Ditto!

I decided to be adult and said "I'd be glad to!", without the slightest trace of gloating (on the outside, at least).

The way things are going these days, it won't be long before a lot of the gun-haters are going to be wanting to get their own guns.

I recognize your dilemma in conceding to train a family member in self-defense; however, something to consider is, when the SHTF and it becomes survival of the fittest, those former sheep become "the competition" for limited resources. Naturally, I'm talking about an Armageddon scenario and not your run-of-the-mill street crime. Just something to consider.
