My First Gun Show

Went to my first gun and knife show in Greensboro NC yesterday. It was a lot bigger than I thought and had a pretty good crowd. I went looking for a particular Ruger 10/22 ATI rifle and didn't really expect to find one, but wanted to see what these shows were like anyways.

I saw my local gun dealer there, and had the lowest prices compared to most everyone else. I almost bought a Ruger SR22 pistol for $299 from them on the spot, but held off. There were plenty of overpriced guns all around, and some good deals. If you look hard enough, you can find good deals, or you could get ripped off if you don't do your homework ahead of time.

I saw a lady not paying attention knock down a dealer's table full of guns. It was painful to watch, not for the lady but for the dealer and his inventory.

I found the Ruger I was looking for early on in my hunt, but waited to buy anything until I have checked the whole show. Luckily I did that because another dealer had the same one for $50 less, which was a steal.

I felt bad for some of the dealers who were only selling shiny shotguns and no one was paying any attention to them. The tables with the most action were the tables with lots of handguns and clearly posted prices.

I had fun at the show, except for having to dodge the crowd all day, but it was worth it. It helped me know that the prices I get at my LGS are some of the best out there, and I got to handle guns I normally wouldn't get to at most shops.

There is a venue near me that has a show usually every 4-6 weeks. They tend to draw a pretty good crowd especially in the winter months when folks want to get out. You are spot on about doing your homework in advance so you know if you are getting a good deal or not.

"Dodging" people is a pretty good description. I hate the ones that stop in the aisles and completely block it just to sit there a chit chat. I also hate the ones that bring a cart or stroller which are even more difficult to navigate around.

I used to go almost every weekend to gun shows. Now a few times a year. Never bought a gun at a gun show in over 30 years either!

I really like the idiots who walk around with a rifle or shotgun over their shoulder with the barrel projecting out behind them right at eye level . . .

Took awhile for me to get back to gunshows after the first one really was nothing more than people selling snake oil and cheap Gerber knife knock-offs. Have been to a couple since and the good ones are more than worth going to. Got turned on to FrogLube at one and turned off by some sort of gun lube I can't remember at another.
