I know it's a zombie thread but this brings back memories of what my dad did for a living. He was a model maker for the tire industry. He would carve the tire tread design into plaster and from that model they would cast the mold. Depending on how often the tread design changed on a tire dictated how big his carving was. Might be a 1/4 tire might be more might be less. When he retired, they were transitioning his job over to CNC use.
