Actually I do with my chosen "one handgun", and even though I've yet to kill a deer the practical experience and familiarity plus the chance witness first hand how a .45 performs on flesh and bone is the reason I chose it.

Beretta 92A1 with 17 round mag (9mm), or Beretta 96 Vertec Inox with 15 round mags (40 cal)

of course the real avant garde choice would be the KELTEC PLR16 pistol with 30 round mags, 5.56 caliber

Come on Guys......read the OP's entire Post before you start posting what isn't even in the scenario....Get with the program !

Now......If things got to the point and this was the scenario of fleeing and total Anarchy.....? I want a LOT of larger firepower in the form of a CZ97 .45 Auto and about 8 loaded mags. I would take as much ammo as I could reasonably carry.

My thinking is this... if it was to this point of chaos....I'm going to be Eliminating someone that wants to harm , rob , steal , or in anyway means ill will , greed , or harm towards me........ I want the firepower and caliber that's plenty for the Job at hand.

I don't see a cozy little survival scenario here in the woods somewhere eating bunnies and squirrels. I'm going to take from the Evil ones, the Hurtful , the thieves , and the Ill intenders..... and give to myself and mine all they possess......CZ97......Lots of 45 Auto.

I do hope my first deserving casualty is carrying a AK , AR , or for that matter ANY kind of center fire rifle.....RIP.
Well reacting to the title of this thread which says one gun, I chose my 12 ga. breach gun. After your rather abrupt mention of the parameters, I went back and re-read the beginning of the correspondence. Upon looking closer at the parameters, I suppose I would grab my 1943 1911-A1 and all the mags and ammo I could readily transport. The old war horse is battle tested and proven, and still shoots better than a lot of new pistols fresh off the shelf. In either case both guns are proven in the field. Maybe since the 12 ga. has a pistol grip and a collapsible stock it will fill the bill anyway. Just a thought.

If you don't like the premises behind the thread, why don't you just move on to another one rather than being rude or disruptive. Please see my prior comments in this thread where I note that FEMA's "ready.gov" site itself often says that some emergencies will call for evacuation while others will call for "sheltering in place". From hurricanes to chemical spills to dirty bomb possibilities, not all disasters are created equal. One does not have to think too hard to imagine a natural or man-made disaster where evacuation to a friend or relative's place in another state is necessary, and open carry of a long arm is impractical.

Firearm ownership is all about two things: recreation (hunting or competing shooting), and risk mitigation. Why someone would show up in a firearm forum and be surprised that people are discussing risk mitigation is beyond me.

As someone posted if you only go with the legal definition of a handgun, and there was no need for concealment, a Draco, preferrably with a brace. Technically, it is a handgun.
If concealability is an inferred requirement, then a 9mm P226 Elite with stainless frame with the 18 round flush magazines. Threaded barrel with appropriate accessory would be a bonus. Another accessory which does not violate the OPs guidelines, would be a 22LR conversion kit.

Ruger makes a whole series of multi-caliber single action pistols.

They offer .22LR/.22MAG, and 9MM/.357MAG, and .45ACP/.45LC.

One of those might be a good bet. Especially the 9/.357 Blackhawk.

It offers a choice between large and small loads for different purposes, and might make your odds of finding ammo a little better.

My Kimber 1911 .45 acp. If I could bring a long gun, it would be my Rem 870 12 gauge pump shotgun with a variety of slugs, Buck shot, and bird shot.
